Getting first DSLR

If you are open to other brands the new Pentax Kr is a viable choice at this price range.
Price from SLR Revolution in Funan.
Pentax kr 18-55 kit (Black, White and Pink only) = $921
Pentax kr 18-55, 50-200 Dual kit (Black only) = $1070

The camera brings with it features like :
1. On camera shake reduction (SR)
2. High ISO capability up to 12800
3. Choice between LiOn and conventional AA batteries
4. Auto aligned HDR capture
5. Custom noise reduction for all ISO levels
6. Fine auto-focus adjustment for auto focus lenses.

Many of these features are found only on much higher end and more expensive cameras, so this is a very value for money camera.

Here is a recent review done by a fellow CSer.

My dad thought it was very cheap back then when he bought the 6MP Fuji S2 pro body. only $3.2k. After a few years, it also thought the D40x kit was also very cheap at 1+k...

Hi , i know pentax and other brands offer just as great camera but because the money is sponsored by my dad and he told me to get a canon/sony dslr thus i have limited to the available choice only

ok then I guess you have to listen to his instructions... but doesn't hurt to 'enlighten' him that other brands are also competitive in this arena :)

ooo.... then a 5Dmk2 also can?

Its this site and imaging resource as far as cameras go, since they provide good sample photos for the reader to compare and analyze. The bad thing about DPReview is their conclusion page which can (and has been) be a bit. So in the end, the best way to use them is to look over the sample and comparison photos. The photos will give a more objective view than a conclusion page written by someone else anyway. :)

i do think that imaging resource tends to be more neutral.

i've seen reviews in dpreview where the summary page seems to sing praises about the camera and then the final scoring is very disappointing despite all of that, and minimal cons (or similar to cameras of other brands, but those have less plus points). if you get what i mean.. in the first place, how can you score a camera? :bsmilie:

In whatever review, there will have to be a judgement after looking through all the facts. These judgement will have a human element in it. Just how good, accurate or without any bias these judgement are.... your guess is as good as mine.

A more comprehensive and less bias way is to read all the review out there whether in print or on web. Do a summation of all the review and hopefully there will be a general consensus which is good and which is not that good.

Rather painful and time consuming.... for me, I will just stick to 1 or 2 reviews. I would prefer a happy and exciting experience of getting "my first DSLR" than one that is laborious and tedious.

since it is more or less narrow down. Just work on these 2 brand base on the budget he gave you.

Sony Alpha DSLR-A850:devil:
Sony Alpha DSLR-A900:devil:
Canon EOS-1D Mark IV:devil:
Canon EOS 5D Mark II:devil:

you may want to chose the more budget full frame sony A850

Hmm..
Understand where you are coming from.
But you should educate him that there are many reputable and good brands other than these two.

Brief History of Pentax - http://www.photoxels.com/history_pentax.html
(The 1st Japanese SLR manufacturer, not some nobody brand)

The background of other major brands is in this site as well. Do have a look just for general info if for nothing else.

And don't forget to factor in future costs as well.

hmm..yup, must pls the guy who pays...get the Sony A900. If you are looking at A33/55, do check out what lenses are compatible if looking at getting 3rd party.

due to the heavy advertisement and marketing from canon and sony , that is why he told me to get from either of this brand..i will try to get him to know other brands

I was trying to find which model of pentax is a full frame camera.
Pentax doesn't produce any full frame camera?

Agree.
Friends using, so easy to borrow lens is a very often used 'selling point' that I see being thrown around so often.
Is it that true in reality?
I guess depends on each persons disposition and certainly no guarantee.
Borrowing the lens is also troublesome for both parties unless meet up is often so that it is easily borrowed and returned.
There is also the grey area of minor blemishes incurred during the loan. Pay for it? Accept payment (and appear to be a "cheap jerk" of a friend) ? Keep quiet and have the bad vibes build up? etc.
Of course straight out damage is easy. Just pay up :)

 So true.

I have used Pentax, Sony and currently Canon systems.

To be frank, I cant seems to achieve the same sharpness I did on my Kx as compared to my 550D now. Perhaps it is the output or setting, something which i am trying to find out now. I decided to switch over due to the higher no of users around(easily to source/sell 2nd hand stuff). This might be a factor that you might wanna consider if u r keen to buy 2nd hand stuff or the availability of accessories. Not to say pentax and sony does not have, but it is almost certain that 90% of the camera shops carry canon/nikon products.

However I sorely miss my pentax system because my ex kx is seriously outstanding (in terms of IQ) as compared to many other entry level dslr. My friends using diff systems have also commented that the IQ is v close to their mid level dslr they are using.

I urge you to read the reviews (Kr and K5 esp) and decide carefully.

The most popular brands might not always produce the best cameras all the time.

My 2 cents of personal experiences :>

Which is no surprise as Pentax K-x is using the same sensor found in the Nikon D90 D5000 and Song A500.

Really value for money.

No prob. Man! If your father is convinced that the 2 brands are good, well they ARE.
Don't argue with the finance minister. :)

Just know that there are other good brands as well for knowledge's sake. ;)

You can buy this if you can part with $16K. :D

What has a FF camera do with anything?

Hi all , have decided to get A55 but now i am considering which lens to get that is good for the trip to japan? would 18-55 be enough or do i need a much better reach lens?

In my last trip to Vietnam, the 18-55mm was more than enough, especially since I just got my camera then. The fact that it has a smooth autofocus motor also made it suitable for a bit of video work, as it is less likely for you to hear the lens trying to focus (as your a55 has continuous autofocus during video capturing).

However, some seniors here recommend the 18-250mm which has the advantage of a longer reach and convenience in that you do not need to change lenses to shoot things in the distance. Not as suitable for video taking though (apparently). Alternatively, you can get another telephoto lens like the 75-300 to complement your 18-55 kit lens :)

If you wanna make some short films or videos, take the Canon.. Nikon's Video quality CMI in comparison to Canon.
