If money no object, Gitzo G1001. Fits your requirements very well, small, light, and very stable. Only catch : It costs $215 + GST.

I recommend the Slik Pro 330DX or Pro 340DX.
Very lightweight, extends to abt 1.5m, has a composite aluminium body, removable head (can fit other heads like the manfrottos), comes with an aluminium two way pan head with quick release plate. I found this tripod to be quite ideal, and it only costs $130 at CP.

Hiee..

I just got this recently and ....the tripod as i can say is VERY stable. Well is like the Manfrotto 190 abut it comes along with a 3way pa head. Its black and i think less twist as compared to the 330/340DX.

By the way......what equipment are you using?......if you are using a small teenie weenie camera then a simple velbon DF-40/DF-50 will do the job. If you use a slr+ lens up 300.......the slik & manfrotto ......entry level ones will do ($110-$200).

The bottom line is - get what you need for your equipment. Heavy tripod will feel lighter on a strap - so get a strap when need to travel on foot from point to point.....

Bring your camera and your heaviest lens into the shop to test the tripod out.

me

$110 at Alan Photo. :P

I can't find it there either, but Cathay has it. Apparently it's new, and a replacement to the G01 (which is on the Gitzo website). Only catch is it's expensive at $215....

thanks

I bought the Manfrotto 190 Pro (black) for 165 (w/o head) at CP. 190 Pro (chrome) was 150, 190D was 110 if I remember right.

any recommendations?

in case you're wondering about how low it can go, with certain tripods and heads, like the Manfrotto 190, you can insert the head from the underside of the tripod, thus hanging the camera upside down, this should allow you to take shots from literally a few cm from ground level. of coz the image will be upside down but all you have to do is to print or project it the other way round.
