Gear Tests: Cinematic look on an APSC?

I benefitted from many self-less sharing on forum and youtube.

So I thought I will do some sharing as well.

A set-up which i believe is close to my ideal.

The objective was to try to get a cinematic look on a Budget. To test out the Zhiyun M Crane, Sigma 30mm F1.4 & Sony a6300 combination.

Unfortunately, it is shot at ISO 1000 w B&W Filter F-Pro which i made a mistake using. That filter was reducing so much light that I had to have such a high ISO and aperture at F1.4. The grain added a cinematic look to it but certainly wasn't my idea.

I was also struggling w the color cast of the filter. The Tianya ND8 also had a reddish color cast that I could not get rid of.

I thought of upgrading to a6500 for the use of touch AF but this test confirmed that you can't see anything on the LCD shooting under bright sunlight. I was shooting blind. No able to frame each shot properly. Auto AF set to wide. I think the AF did a great job. The slow mo made each transition look intentional. It wasn't really. But it turned out well.

On the overall, I am happy w the set-up, especially this cinematic look on an APSC camera.

Shot w HFR 120 fps internally in a6300.

Nicely done, impressive AF - looks as though u got another person to help with focus

Zhiyun crane easy to setup and use?

nice, the Sun is really the best light source, and it's free!

the reddish colour cast is because of IR pollution. you can get rid of it by using an IR Cut filter. sometimes it could also be the quality of your filter. I'm not sure if the brand has anything to do with it tho.

which F-Pro filter type are u using?

Yes, IMHO, Zhiyun M is lighter than Zhiyun (original). I can set it up 60 sec or less. But having said that, its impossible to switch from Gimbal to Tripod for a running gun/ actual client.

With my set-up, I am overloading the gimbal but it still works. The camera has limited space to move because it is oversized.

I could get away w the slow-mo. But in 25P, you really need ninja walk and adjust the deadband to get smooth shots.

The reddish cast is from the filter.

The one i used in the footage is an F-Pro filter from BnW. I have an Tianya ND8 but the reddish cast was worse than the BnW which i didnt bring it out. Tianya 62mm, 77 mm, which i have seems to give perfect color balance. I have the 49 mm, 52 mm, which both have very strong red color cast. lol.

it's a ND filter right? if its red it's probably IR pollution, which happens at very strong ND filtration

Ah I see. Thanks for the new knowledge.

Do you also mean that adding an IR cut filter can remove the red color cast? Thanks in advance! :)

Great videography. Looks smooth! Can pull down the whites a tad more. All that's missing - 21:9 letterbox!

Yeah! maybe not remove but reduce it by a lot. out of all camera brands this issue affects Blackmagic cameras the most that's why I quite familiar with it.

Here you go, a clearer comparison: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rPHSyHHSb0o

That light. Damn. Your choice of framing and timing/positioning (for the talent & sun) was what made it cinematic (to my eyes). With your skills, you probably could have also easily achieved it even on m43. ;p Throw a less skilled person there with a FF, probably wouldn't have worked out. Thanks for sharing your test. Agree with Petty, some of the focus pulls look gooooood.

Ah, thanks for the info. I tried to adjust the color balance in camera but could not successfully balance the reddish cast as well.

I saw the video. I think even with the IR filter, the color cast is out of balance...

sigh... so many things... lol

Thanks. Still learning la. I am lucky this once. but i think expensive gears sometimes help. lol

hahah the most important thing is your blacks remain black and not tinted in red for example, because that's the hardest thing to fix.

Thanks Ryan.

I hear that you have officially become the gear sponsor for CS video? lol

Hahaha Jace, that is why even Facebook is now working with a 3rd party to verify or sieve out fake news ... :bsmilie: :nono:

Fan of your works now Jace, let me know how the cast on the filter works out for u.

I'm no video guy at all whatsoever but I have read that old manual focus Leica R type lenses on Canon's have a really nice vintage 70s movie look to them. Any of you bros know anything about this?
