G11, is it worth buying?

i started out with a 350D.. but as I travel a lot, i find it a hassle to lug that old thing around.. furthermore, I have three lenses that i always carry with me.. so the whole bag itself is quite a load for me to carry as hand luggage..

hence i switched to high end compact.

Was torn between the S90 and G11. I agree the S90 performs better under low light whats more with a f2.0 whereas G11 is only at f2.8.

but when I went to the shop and fiddled with both cams, my fingers and hands loved the G11 more as they find the S90 is too small to handle. Maybe someone with petite hands would be more suitable but not me.

Hence I've gotten myself a G11 and been loving it since.. Cos it fits like a compact, but performs better than one. And love the swivel screen too.. makes taking photos at odd angles a breeze!

agree. S90 suits petite hands. G11 has a good grip. both are very capable cams. I own both.

beside canon compacts.. time to look at some others too.. that LX3 and GF1 are sooooo GOOD ! :thumbsup:

This looks really pretty. But somehow it looks like a lil like an LX3? Does it have M A P S modes?

The Leica is like Lambo Gallardo while the LX3 is more like Audi R8 V10. They share the same engine but different appearance and badges.

I bought my G11 yesterday@$829 from South Asia Computer (Lvl 3 Funan). the recommended shops such as cathay/John/TK/MS Color all out of stock with sell price@$799 with 2 8G SD card (class 2, if i am not wrong) In Funan, there were no more than 4 shops which have stock for G11, as of 1/23.

my package includes 1 8G SD card (class 4), bag, tripod, cleankit. During online warranty register, I also bought the additional 2 yrs warranty for $90.

Hope this info will help those guys who are interested in G11.

yeah, i have also been looking for g11 but most are out of stock i even checked with dd elec (selling @ $720) and was informed they will only have stock next week but i doubt they will really do. im now thinking of ordering online instead. worst case i will be ordering the s90 from them. (their priceis $600)

Yes... the S90 is a good camera but i just really really cannot stand the position of the pop-up flash. Do you have the tendency to place your fingers at the flash so when you want to use the flash you cannot and the flash jams and you have to restart the S90?

the flash motor torque is kinda high.. unless u purposely stop the flash from popping up, ur fingers wont be able to stop it from coming up... just use the landyard provided... otherwise u drop the camera due to shock... but after used to it, its okay... 2 times 3-5 feet drops on the floor, the camera is still working alrite... so no worries...

if no pop up flash, i dnt think the flash will clear the lens barrel... small design constraint i suppose...

i think u will complain on the short battery life more than the flash location..

hi all, this is a long true story of me and my g11. please bear with me.

i just bought a g11 for my wife last week for a japan trip. I value this trip a lot because we will not be going out on trips again for the next few years. i didn't want her to use her usual simple compact. I wanted her to shoot in raw so that I can slowly do post processing after that (she does not really care about pp, haha), hence i chose G11 instead of other normal compacts. I was using my dslr with a big bag

2 weeks before the trip, i was torn between s90 and g11 too. i read reviews and even went to vivocity canon showroom and tested both on many occasions.

here are my findings.
================
1) i prefer the g11's feel and all the easily accessible buttons.
2) i think S90 buttons are more overloaded, and the camera seems a big congested. i will like the s90's (ixus body) as a point and shoot (full auto mode no need to adjust anything)
3) the G11 zoom is quite good, as compared to LX3 or S90
4) the gf1 or a ep2 was not considered because my wife will not want one with a protruding lens and i think it is also too expensive.

During the trip.
===========
the g11 battery life is really good. Considering that japan is in winter and cold at 5 deg now, the battery life was unaffected and it lasted for a few full days.

my wife loves the swivel lcd. you know how girls like to stretch out their hand and take self portraits of themselves. now the hit rate is 100%, because my wife can see herself when taking the photo. we can do it together

as for myself, i bring out 2 big lens (1 wide angle and 1 tele zoom), 1 big dslr with battery grip and a camera bag everyday for 15 hours everyday. by day 3 i was developing a shoulder-ache on both sides. and i have 5 more days to go. everyday i look at her in envy and thought how nice if my cam was as light as her g11.

coming back home and viewing on laptop

after i came back to singapore, i immediately loaded all my photos in my laptop, the g11 photos are rich and clear. the qulity has exceeded my expectations, somewhat comparable to my dslr shots. for night shots at higher iso, mine was definitely better by a fair bit.

conclusion
========
g11 has good battery life.
photos are good.
can attach a speedlight.
most importantly, my wife likes it as much as i do too.

I expect myself to be bringing out my g11 more often than my dslr to practice on composition and basics. my dslr will have to wait in the dry cabinet for a moment until my shoulder recovers.
