fz5 filter

Haha.. ermz just to point out something:
Absolute difference of price of camera = 200
but FZ 5 comes with a battery, S2 doesn't.
so you add price of 4 2500 mah AA batteries + charger: (from 13 to 20, say 16) + (from 35 - 45, say 40)
thus absolute price difference = 256

price of a spare FZ5 batt: 28
for that extra 56 u can buy 2 more FZ5 batts which should last you 1500 shots.
to get extra 1500 shots out of the S2, you need ,say 500 shots each set batt, thus u need extra 3 sets.
3 * 16 = $48
Thus, given such comparison, to get 1500 shots from either camera, given cost of camera, the absolute price difference INCREASES!

*not to mention of course, 3 * 4 = 12 AA batteries you must carry vs 2 spare FZ5 batt

FZ5 can take the pro cards btw.
also if they can support 1gb they can support 2. FZ5 uses the fat16 system hits a limit at 4gb i think.. so u should be able to use all the way up.

FZ5, if u care fo spend $15, can make ur own battery pack with 6AA batts. initial test with 2500mAh: 800 shots and still not dead. then had to use the batt for my flash so took it out to recharge.

Beethoven => hmm that one i'm not sure.. it's just something i've heard and read.
Anyway circular polarizers are more expensive than linear ones because they have to include both the linear polarizer and a quarter-wave plate. I suppose the stacking of more material is detrimental to light quality. it's like stacking filters.
and if i'm not wrong, circular polarizers are 1st used coz film SLR autofocus cameras relies on the light coming in. most of the digital cameras don't need it nowadays. I'm not sure about SLR, never tried. if i'm not wrong also dun need, coz tech is more advanced. I've heard it's necessary though, if you're using high end dslrs (aka 1dmk2, d2h etc)

Here's more stuff on linear VS circular

hi all,

just got myself 3 filters today... total damage: $46

wan to ask if there are any difference between a hoya circ PL and a tokina circ PL???
i was told that hoya is made by tokina... then i got myself the tokina at a cheaper price...

breakdown:
UV (Hoya): $7
Macro +4 (Hoya): $17
Circ PL (Tokina): $22

Worth the price? pls give comments! :)

Where did u get them from? the UV is cheap. Got mine from MS at $10.

good deal

the +4 macro basically means you can move your camera 4 times closer when focussing...

oh I see... so what happens when you put a telecon after the +4 macro?

Why do people buy $10 to protect the expensive Leica Lens? I mean, wont the "quality" of the $10 filter degrade the quality of what the Leica lens can capture?

ermz.. i dun think +4 = move 4 times closer..
it's just magnification.
and +2 is not twice of +1.
it's only that +1 < +2 < +3 < +4
so +4 gives you greates magnification amongst the 4.

cheap filters do affect. but the more expensive multi coated also no difference 99% of the time.

Glass factories produce different levels of glass. expensive glass got less or v v few air bubbles, cheaper one not as good. produced by tokina can mean low quality or high quality glass. hoya I've seen many reviews saying that they're better quality. Tokina POL/CPL has a different colour cast as compared to hoya ones. If i'm not wrong less neutral.
Hoya is a division of THK - Tokina Hoya Kenko
Hoya OWNS the glass factory btw. Tokina just makes the filter.
meaning.. tokina gets glass from hoya to make tokina filters, while hoya sends glass to tokina to make hoya filters.
tells u about the different filters

just found out:

for macro filter
Magnification and diopters are related, in that

magnification = dipoters/4 + 1

So a +2 diopter filter will give a magnification of 1.5

and yes:
Circular (PL-CIR) or Linear (PL)?
If a camera uses a beam splitting mirror with sensors behind it, for autofocus or metering, then a Circular Polariser is required for the beam splitter to work properly. Most autofocus SLR cameras are like this.

However, most autofocus digital cameras don't use beam splitters, so a linear polariser will normally suffice. But if in doubt, get a circular one.

What is the difference between nikon 6t and a macro filter? which on should i get for my fz5?

Hmm, I got mine from MS, but it says 'Raydawn' on the lens, not Hoya...

thanks unseen that was very informative!

what about other filters? do u use any others?

is the Macro filter also called closed up filter ?? Or they are two different things ?

Same thing. Mostly termed close-up filters.

6T is 62mm thread, +2.9 dioptre
5T is 62mm thread, +1.5
4T is 52mm thread, +2.9 (cheaper than 6T)
3T is 52mm thread, +1.5

Magnification also dependent on focal length.

See this useful article for macro by Hector Niam
Though he uses Fuji camera, the computation is the same:
Quote:
"Meanwhile, you can do a some calculations to find out magnification factor before deciding which close-up filter/lens to purchase. The formula goes like this:
magnification factor = f / ( 1000 / d )
where
f is the maximum focal length of the camera,
d is the diopter rating of the close-up filter/lens"

Hmm, I got mine from MS, but it says 'Raydawn' on the lens, not Hoya...

Mine too..got it for $8.....most ppl seem to get HOYA...any difference in quality?

me? i use infra red, POL, and UV only.
infra-red is cool. you get really cool photos. unfortunately.. it's been like gathering dust for over 2 mths ++++
:(

Thanks tchuanye. very informative..

Can someone confirm this: The fz5 can only take SD cards up to 1GB only?

It can take 2G as well. no problem

No need to waste money on circular ones.

Quoted from DCResource.com
Circular polarizers are needed with cameras that use a split beam metering system such as DSLRs most cameras including the FZ line do not use split beam metering.
At one time the SLR cameras that were autofocus used the split beam and it was easier to say autofocus cameras need a circular polarizer.

The UV (Hoya) you got is very inexpensive.
Is it multicoated (i.e. labelled HMC)?

Either get Hoya's

55mm UV(0) Haze Glass Filter
55mm Haze UV(0) (HMC) Multi-Coated Glass Filter
55mm Haze UV(0) (S-HMC) Super Multi-Coated Glass Filter

It gets more expensive from top to down.

If u want your pictures looking 'warmer' like for portraits
buy
55mm Skylight 1B Glass Filter
55mm Skylight 1B (HMC) Multi-Coated Glass Filter
55mm Skylight 1B (S-HMC) Super Multi-Coated Glass

I guess most people find that they shd buy the cheapest one because it just acts as protective shield agst the precious cam lens.

Anybody who bought 55mm hoya filters?
the lens cap by panasonic can fit ? i hear ppl sayin it cannot fit. hmmm the solution is buy another third party lens cap rightah?

ya that is the prob i facing now, my original len cap cannot fit well into the filter len
