bought mine from Song Brothers for $22. :(
but compared to the original lumix one, it's cheap. that one costs $69!!

the original one cost around $30 at CP if I remember correctly.
They call it the Lumix Protection Filter or somethng like it.
Personally I think the UV has no real use but it does allow a $10 filter to protect a $$$ Leica lens...

thks man ....decided already......now to find the black one!!!
;)

was at sls alan phot today. they seem to have a silver one on display.
ms told me 2-3 days ago they have no stock of fz5 at all...maybe new stock has arrived.

btw, you may want to check out the new sony DSC H1 as well. review indicated its Stabliser not as good as Canon S2 and Lumix and image quality not as good but between the 3, the sony scored highest on low noise.
but memory stick.... (arggh!)

I find that the other advantage is that if you add in other filters, the metal parts of the other filters screw on onto the metal filter ring of the UV filter instead of the plastic phayee adaptor threads. This helps to protect the plastic threads from further wear.

i noticed this term "phayee" is used alot here.
Did a search for it online and the info given does not explain anything.
So is "phayee" a brand of optical accessories or a generic term to refer to an interfacing ring between camera and lens?

regards

I did a search before and the conclusion is :dunno:
I think it is a generic term.

Is it better to use a polarizer or a UV filter to protect the lens? Which one is better in most situations?

polarizer is not to protect the lens. It cost 40 bucks and it darkens sky, and reduce reflection on non-metal surface.

Which brand of macro filters is recommended?

polariser for $40? which brand? new?

Curious how much you paid for the camera...is it cheaper at Mustapha?
Anyway, so far, I have bought a Hoya UV filter to protect the lens (I bought from CP for $13 but I heard they cost $10 at MS).
Last night I also bought a +4 Macro filter (nice!) and a circular polarisation filter...heh heh. the macro filter really works but I need to use a tripod for very close up shots.

What does the +4 Macro filter do? Newbie here lah... ;)

the +4 macro basically means you can move your camera 4 times closer when focussing...

sorry, i was just quoting from some one who posted here. Not very sure also.

Thanks I just got a new Hoya one for that price.

How do you tell if it is the correct alignment? I tried some sample shots and I noticed two differences, darkness and clarity. The clearer the picture (can see more fine lines), the less vivid the colour... so which is "correct"? or is there a correct one at all...

Polariser: get a brand new hoya linear POL for $20++
don't need waste $$ on CP. Effect of POL is rumoured to be better than CP in some cases.

to make sure get max effect, the axis you're pointing your camera along and the axis from you to the sun must be perpendicular. Then just turn the pol/cp till u get the effect most pleasing to your eyes. THAT is the "correct" one..

Why FZ5?
Leica Lens
Less Noisy images
Small and compact
Cheaper

Why S2?
VGA + stereo recording mode
Flip screen (plus or minus?)
accepts canon accessories
Longer exposure possible for astrophotography/night scene
Minus Points - Bulky, uses 4 AA batteries, noiser images at ISO 200 and above, $200 more!
Just playing Devil's Advocate 'cos I've been swinging back and forth between these two cameras...

$200 cheaper, but that's absolute price. If you want a spare batt for the FZ5, then that price gap goes down. (Spare SD card, I'm assuming, is a given in both cases.)

AA batts can be an advantage! You can buy replacements anywhere. Your proprietary ones run out, what will you do?

Bulky, once again, is a matter of perpective. Compared to the camera I am currently using, the S2 is small and the fz5 is miniscule!

Anyway...

Can someone confirm this: The fz5 can only take SD cards up to 1GB only?
