JimDavis said:While dSLR gives you more flexibility in playing with your camera, it also means higher investment.
If one would like to equip the dSLR with the same range as FZ20/FZ30 can take, and constant f2.8, that means other than the dSLR body, one would need at least the following lens:
1. A 18-70mm f2.8 lens (Maybe the Sigma 18-70mm f2.8 EX DG lens) - Approx. S$800
2. A 70-200mm f2.8 lens (Nikkor 70-200mm f2.8) - Approx. S$1.6K without VR a.k.a. IOS
In this case, for zoom will still short by 100mm at least. And by now with the camera body, the investment has already come out to be at least $3.5K or more.
If VR lens is chosen, particularly for the tele lens, then at least another S$4K will have to be set aside.
So, can't compare dSLR with FZ-series in this way.
Anyway, many Lumixers after upgrading to dSLR, they still missed their good old FZ cameras, that's the reason why I am still keeping my good old FZ10 for a casual traveling camera - constant f2.8, powerful zoom with O.I.S. and don't forget the renown Leica lens they have, good for lanscape photos.
fz30_user said:Hi JimDavis,
Is it possible to replicate the setup of FZ30 on a DSLR with a single lens? I mean the 35-420mm range? Reason is I don't want to carry an extra lens and be bothered changing it also
Thanks
JimDavis said:I might be wrong, but I think the closest so far is 28-300mm, however, you will not get the following:
1. O.I.S. (in Nikon's term is VR, in Canon's term is I.S) will not be available
2. Aperture will not be from f/2.8 to f/3.5, the range will be higher, probably f/3.5~5.6
Some of these lens might have focus hunting issue.
policemf said:hey...around how much is it for a decent tripod that can take the weight of FZ30?
metallilan said:probably the slik sprint pro (i don't recall, but i got mine at $90 or something) will do but the ball head is pretty sucky, recommend changing to a giottos mh1002 and a quick release plate or a manfrotto head. a slik 330dx will be good if you're planning to upgrade to dslr.
policemf said:i think its a good camera for starters...for e kind of shots u mentioned.. fz30 got the 'panning' option on scene mode..which i think is programmed for those kinda shots..
plus, u have full manual controls to adjust to ur own liking, once ure better at it all la..
jus from a noob point of view..
but u mentioned sepang f1 circuit, can take pics up close ah? ive not been there yet.. but not sure if the 12x optical zoom is good enough..plus i think its diff to take good pictures of damn fast (im assuming ure talking bout f1) cars while zooming.. corect me if im wrong pls..
maybe the more pro guys here can show us their samples of the pics pixelfreak is talking bout?

Is there any wide angle attachment for the FZ30 & how much will it cost?
