FYI Faulty 56M flash :( beware

that's why i modded an ext pack using sealed lead acid batt 6V3A. gets to over 1000 shots before the battery goes flat. its never hot, and there's no risk of an exploding batt in the batt chamber because the "batts" are actually inserts (dummy batts). so far no issues on my km5600 or 5400 after a few thousand shots each.

Interesting. How do you do that bro? I'm interested to do one for my 3600 too.

easier to show you the set up and for you to play with it :) you'll need parts from bras basah, slt and perhaps a neighbourhood shop. took me about 2 hours for the first unit, faster for my backup set.

Interesting. show us one day should we meet up. keen too. ;)

the modded water bottle goes into a lowepro sliplock 60aw very nicely (extra space can accomodate your flash and the curly cable when on the move). the pouch clips securely on your belt and the whole set up looks kinda pro

OMG! you very DIY pro! Good to shoot event with this man. :bsmilie:

how much you spent in total for this DIY?

works great with weddings and church events that i cover. total cost < $50 excl the lowepro pouch. the most i pushed it was about 1100 shots before the batt went flat. almost covered an entire wedding on it. bye bye hot alkalines...
batt weighs abt 700g, thats the only downside, of course you can get a smaller 6v1A sla which weighs much less but i'd expect that to cover 200-300 shots only. still, should be better than alks.

Wah Trigger Happy.. Brilliant la!!! 50 bucks of DIY to replace the $$$$$ quantam...

Hows the recharge timing compared to using 4AA??

(Kow-tow, Kow-tow). Best mod I ever seen. Must learn & try to make one already.

4AA about 8 hours? (forgot already! :bsmilie: )
Sealed Lead Acid (SLA) -- 4 hours from flat to fat. :bsmilie: if not fully drained, normally about an hour tops.

borne out of a need. besides, modding makes any hobby more fun! was about to plonk $$ on the quantum, but didn't like fact that the batt inserts screw into the batt chamber (bro EOW showed me once). the batt inserts i made are from wooden dowels (Art Friend, Bras Basah/ Taka) that are about same width as a AA batt. Thumbtack or screw to solder/ lock the wires into place.

oopz.. i forgot whats the actual term.. i was referring to the recharge timing after the flash fires.. (say fire 1/1 flash output, how long does it takes for the capacitor to build up and for the red light to light up behind the flash) ?

cos using AA batteries, initially if the batts are newly charged, the flash takes a few seconds... and as the power drains the time takes longer...

i think its called cycle rate or something like that. about 4-5 secs, almost comparable to quantum but i believe the latter's a much bigger SLA, so higher ampere resulting in lower cycling time. i'm no electrical engineer so this is what i surmise from what i know. compared to AAs, thats a lot faster, and the rate stays constant, unlike AAs which take longer and longer to recharge the caps with each shot.

normally i shoot at 1/2 power, can get 2 or 3 exposures at a go unless super high ceiling then 3rd shot may be dark.

Oh...Organise an outing lah bro. Then we all learnt from you to make the ext pack. ;p

more like a shopping trip cum indoor gathering. we'll need to get parts from a few places, then gather at someone's home to put it all together :)

my place is ok during weekends. but hor, in sengkang, near to you not the rest. :bsmilie:

wow, i can say this is a really informative thread
(1) those cheapo batteries can ruin a flash due leakage from overheat
(2) some darn cool DIY mod!!

Trigger Happy,

Instead of wood, you can also use paper to roll it to AA size, put the wires in center. Sometime its hard to come by a AA size wood.
