Just a quick question: does the same 5% discount for foreigners apply for their other items as well (eg lens)? so i can take 5% off their internet price to get a true indication of price?

How about the 10% points? can it be used on the same day for your next purchase?

Thinking of buying a few items for my upcoming trip to Japan...Thanks in advance! :)

5% is for Tax free so apply for everything as long as your purchase is more then around S$300 (forgot the actual amount) Not every shop offer this though so check before commit. As for the 10% you can use it on the same day, so you pay first, get the points then pay the 2nd item and claim the 10% rebate, you get points again for the 2nd purchase.

you either get the 5% tax rebate OR the 10% points back. both yodobashi and bic has the same system. technically, the point cards are meant for japan citizens or residents but both will give them fairly freely. the tax rebate is for purchases above 10k yen and point system for any amount.

10% only applies for cash. it is 8% for credit card. points usually can be claimed on the same day though i think yodobashi needs at least one day if the card is given out on the same day.

Many thanks for your helpful replies! :)

BIC Camera Website lists D3 as 578K Yen...am I right to assume that shop price is lower at 523K Yen?

You are half right in the sense that there might be special time limited promotion at the shop itself.

Else the price is either the same or the web price is likely to be cheaper. This is my experience with Yodobashi. Since Bic operates similar to Yodobashi, i think the reasoning applies.

However, in Japan, the shops that dun give out points sell the stuff cheaper. But they might not be as easily accessible compared to Yodobashi, Bic, Best, Softmap etc. If when we factor in the transport and time taken, it is sometimes better to buy at the big shops that give points instead and the actual price diff is not so big when you consider the 10-18% rebates.

For the small shops, here is a good site to give you a rough idea of the price (its a site that consolidates many many prices from smaller shops)

Oh, someone asked which part am I staying. I stay near Yokohama.

latest pricing from nephew down in japan:

523 000 Yen.

-5% if you show your passport.

or you can get 10% of that price back as "points" to be spent on any other thing within the shop.

hence: 523 000 - 52 300 yen = 470 700 yen
= 5992$ sgd.

btw, it's from BIC camera, down at Shibuya, price matched to sakuraya.

Are you sure it's that cheap? By the way 470 700 yen= S$6158 (yesterday exchange rate):)
It is still so cheap compared to other shop's prices.

When did your nephew get the price? Do we need to ask them for the price through email before or we can just walk in to get that price?:)

Is there any notice if I want to buy stuffs from BIC camera? Do they have a website?

Thank you very much:)

You still have to pay 523000yen. The 10% is only returned to you in points that you use to buy other items at their store.

Yes they do have a website and no they do not ship overseas.

It is the link to BIC camera website, it shows the lastest products in the store I guess. I saw a small number 5 in green under the image of the D3 and other lenses. Don't know if it indicates the warranty period:dunno: Anyone know Japaneses can help.

If it's covered with 5 years of warranty, that is so great as in other countries, it only has 1 year of warranty:)

5 year shop warranty just like Harvery Norman. You will need to bring it back to the shop for them to service for you. Good for locals there but not for here.

It seems like the D3 has fallen to ard S$5300 in Japan. Is anyone considering getting a set there?

I'll be in Tokyo for a couple of days. The price difference makes it rather appealing.
