FUJI Large Sensor Compact

still much too early to see how this camera will fare... fuji is a bit far off in digital offerings and there is no benchmark to show if IQ is anywhere close to the X1.

but in execution, i think its perfect. can't wait to get one. their design process really reflects badly at what leica could have done with the X1.

i agree that in this case a fixed lens is more appealing that an interchangeable lens system. i love the simplicity of it and framing with 35mm is sublime. this is perfect as an everyday camera. i sure hope its sturdy as i'll be running around with nothing on it but a strap.

As a X1 ex-owner, I must say that the ergonomics of the X1 cannot be faulted. The controls are well laid out and a joy to use. Leica does not need to mimic a M series camera, the X1 has its own character. It's major flaws are slow operational speed and hesitant AF.

The back of the X100 is more cluttered actually and I don't see an ISO button. The size is also a bit larger than the X1.

Whatever the case, I'll grab a X100 once it's available. Yet to see really bad IQ from APS-C sensor :)

Isn't the ISO on the dial?

I think Fuji have done a great product decision here for the more demanding photogs that needed a lightweight and easy to use companion (or even sole) camera. Brings to mind the Hexar AF, Nikon 35Ti and 28Ti, Contax T2/T3 from some time back. In fact it would be great renaissance if APS-C digital updates to these film cameras could be designed and manufactured.

I think the two dials are for shutter speed and exposure compensation.

the 2 top dials are already set for the shutter speed and exp comp, therefore the 2 back dials could probably be for the menu and iso

Even before the world could see how the X100 performs, it has already won the 'Star' at Photokina.

For being a very innovative product. On the same breath, I am puzzled the Lumix GH2 beat the NEX. The NEX image quality may not be as good due to the lenses but it definitely has a better wow factor. Must be that menu issue again. :)

wah this thread going strong.... but isn't it a bit early to get excited about this camera? The release date is so far away...

maybe NEX WOW factor already have been lost since it's already in the circulation for quite sometime. the real question is how the hell NX100 came in the picture? Maybe there's somekind a magic this one possesses?

The force is strong bro, nobody can resist... :p

wah the styling damn retro and nice sial...
much better than all the other aps-c size compacts like ep1 , panasonic and sony nex

I w'd consider buying just for the style alone. Old design has character.

Haven't been this excited about a camera for a long time. It has seems to ooze retro coolness while promising ease of use and great image quality. And all at a reasonable price. You can't ask for much more than that!

does anyone here have any idea how fast the autofocus is going to be?

IMO this camera is going to die a terrible death if AF does not live up to the rest of the camera, especially given the indicative price of 1000USD

As wonderful and groundbreaking as this camera is, and as much as i want one (the perfect affordable street camera, potentially)...if the AF is going to be like any other PnS...then i cant buy one

Sure i can MF zone focus in advance...but only at maybe f/8 (where i have reasonable depth of field and some margin for error) which limits me to pure daylight only...no way in hell i can zone focus accurately at say...f/2

All i know is that it is working on contrast detection...and that Fuji claims it will be 'fast'..but i have never come across even a remotely fast contrast-detect AF so far...ever

Don't expect AF to be pro sport standard and it will not disappoint. Actually I think a mechanically-coupled focus w AF confirmation would be really nice in low light.

I wonder if it is fully compatible with Nikon flash

Of course not expecting sports shooting AF but there has definitely got to be some speed to it. Definitely faster than any current contrast detect AF currently available. And of course minimal shutter lag(the more like a rangefinders click, the better) Am keeping my fingers crossed. A good MF system with confirmation light is also very welcome. The DOF scale in the VF of the x100 gives me a good impression that fuji means business in the AF section, so i do hope you're right

Cant wait for this to come out. Gonna be a long 6 months

The fastest contrast AF cams I have used are the Lumix. If the X100 can focus faster than the GH1, that will be very fast!

On the bright side, at least I'll not be buying anything else for the next 6 months ;)

At the moment, anything faster than my e-pl1 will be good enough :bsmilie:

x100 will be my backup camera!
