For video: Canon 70D or Panasonic GH3 ?

I think I better start a new thread as previous thread of VG30 vs GH3 has been replaced with talk of the upcoming Canon 70D vs Panasonic GH3.

Ok, the question is this:

I know that once I bought a DSLR, I will be committed/stuck with their lens.

Can I know whether the EF Canon lens for 70D are cheaper or the micro 4/3 lens for GH3 are cheaper ?

Stick discussion to video only.

Thanks

Just buy the one that's already available and start shooting la. by the time u decide a new system come out than you wanna do poll again?

Shoot in the now.

for lens it's dependent on what you want both m43 and canon got both cheap and ex lenses. if you want cheaper still buy the samyang/rokinon cine lenses with adapter, since you'll probably be shooting with follow focus right? or are you still considering which follow focus system you getting.

or are you still considering which follow focus system you getting.

Thanks eleveninth.

This may sound weird but after I turn off the red color peaking on the VG30, I found that relying on my eyes without the peaking is easier to focus ... not sure why though ...

So, I am not considering buying any follow focus for the time being ...

I think you're missing the point of getting a follow focus.

Yeah, what then is a follow focus ?

The follow focus arise from the question I post about difficulties in getting the camera to focus accurately.

So I thought it was a gadget to help me to focus manually

A follow focus has two main functions:

It increases the travel distance for your fingers/hands, so that the focus pull occurs over several centimeters vs sometimes mere miillimeters.
It allows you to mark the focusing points on a dial so you know which subject will be focused at which rotation angle of the rack focus.

You must still be able to achieve critical focus visually before you can mark the dial. And that's where the focus peaking /expanded view function of a camera is useful.
If you are using the camera for travels and day-to-day events, a geared follow focus is not a good idea. It requires a rod system and you need to gear your lenses.

Ok make sense, good explanation. thanks

ok noted but it will be troublesome, right ? Before long all the lens will be marked. :)

Ok will try the expanded view on my vg30. thanks

Agreed, that will be too cumbersome !

...

u mark on the disc of the follow focus.

Hahaha yes eleveninth, paiseh sorry sorry serious typo error, mark on the disc of cos.

Imagine mark on the lens :bsmilie:

there are some follow focus systems which are already pre-marked so you just need to adjust the marker, like the Edelkrone Focusone pro

Thanks bro, wanna ask you, do you find the red recording video button a tee wit difficult to press ?

ok la.. not too bad. takes a little getting used from GH2 but it becomes second nature after a while

Welcome to the GH family :)

I rarely use that button as I prefer to switch to video/film mode when I know I'm shooting video. This allows you to use the regular shutter button.

The red rec button is horrible if you are used to the canon systems ...

I've completely disregard that button and use the shutter button instead ...

*Note that i'm using both 5d3 & Gh3 ... So its abit of a 'user' problem IMO if you have both systems...
