Looking at BNS forums, I see many times ppl selling fairly old equipment saying warranty card unfill... trying to say that if u buy, fill it up and post to distributor means warranty only starts?

Just for the benefit for those that is not familiar, the warranty period for the items starts with the date in the receipt ... regardless if the warranty card is unfill or not.

True, the only benefit of an unfilled warranty card is for the 2nd owner to register as the original owner as some manufacturer do not allow transfer of warranty. However, as far as I am aware, this rule is only on paper and rarely enforced.

Yeah. I don't like to buy from BnS with items stating warranty card unfilled. It sounds as good as you are buying an item without warranty. Even if you filled in after you buy from BnS, warranty might not be valid anymore if manufacturer found out this set has been used for more than the warranty period given, especially L lens which have lens code.

Ok to make things more clear, this are few points:

- original buyer bought DSLR, register online as PETER. Sold to JOHN and JOHN take the camera to repair (assuming still within the warranty period).. then no problem. Most brands (i know nikon and canon) wont care who brings it in.. as long as its under warranty
- original buyer bought DSL, and this person PETER never register, never post the part of the warranty card. Then Sell camera to JOHN, JOHN bring to repair but show receipt and the warranty card (not the part u suppose to sent in - assuming it has one), then the shop will just take the official receipt as proof for date of purchase and start the warranty period from that date.
- If original buyer sent in the warranty card, then same thing... the 1st rule above applies ..

So its not so much on the warranty card.. the warranty card is like a license to show that the item is under SINGAPORE warranty... while the receipt is the most important document to show date of purchase (if u never register or never sent in anything)

Hope all are informed and makes better decision when buy in BNS :)

this ought to be a sticky posted in the bns sections.

the seller could be just informing the potential buyer that the warranty card is not filled. he/she may not mean that u can just fill it up and starts with the date u fill in. i know of many shops who do not fill up the warranty card.

here are the impt things to note when u speak warranty of 2nd hand products:
1) warranty card and receipt (original preferred of coz) should be provided.
2) warranty card should have the dealer stamp.

if u can fulfill these, and assuming no cheating on the seller's part, i don't see why the service centre won't recognize the warranty.

another point to note: if warranty is not completed and sent within x days, it may invalidate the warranty. time may be of essence.

this one can easily resolved.. just go there with receipt and warranty card (hide away the portion that u suppose to sent to distributor) then if they say never receive warranty registration, u can insist u sent already and then blame them for not handling their job properly.

they know we know the above method, that is why most will just need you receipt to varify the date of purchase without the need to hv it registered officially.

(this is why many brands are giving u 3 mths more warranty if u register online in order to encourage ppl to register their purchase.. like sony, canon etc)

As far as I am aware of, there is nothing to send back to Canon so we don't have to worry about sending back the registration card within 7 days.

good point. many times the shops will keep the manufacturer copy. i assume they send to the company.

no receipt also bo pa kay...
Not true all the time...Sometimes NSC will accept warranty without receipt if you get them to check serial number. If the product was released less than a year ago they will still accept even if there is no card/receipt.

Sorry.I meant no receipt.

Another scenario i've encountered is for someone like Peter to sell it through a middleman John who is also a camera shop owner. John will issue a receipt in his shop's name to the eventual buyer Alan. Alan though buying a 2nd hand lens, will get a full term warranty coverage as its unfilled. H/w, John will have to manage his stock accordingly.
