For the price of a new Lowepro Fastpack 250, any other contenders?

did a little excel of all the photo backpacks with side access that i know off and it does seem to jump in price considerably if there is a laptop compartment. Can definitely see a pattern here.

if the Fastpack 350 US$124.95 is the most ex in the line then similar in price would be
i) Kata 3n1 33 US$119.99
ii) Vanguard Up-Rise 43 US$119.99
iii) Tamrac 3375 US$109.95

Surprising to me that the Up-Rise 48 US$189.99 is similar in price to the TT SW Hard Drive US$189.75 with the Skyborne 45 costing US$199.99

prices from adorama.

Please note that apart from thinktank and more expensive bags, most of the bags you mentioned are much cheaper in SG

i know just that needed a more accesible price comparison sites like Amazon, B&H and hence i randomly picked Adorama.

For a 3 year old line, the Fastpack range with side access still good value for money especially if need laptop compartment.

Personally, I only shortlist 2 backpacks for own liking;

Kata 466i
Vanguard uprise 48 or 46

I end up getting 466i coz it's lighter. Vanguard is built v solid. Hard body full protection for the cam, but it's heavier

Vanguards are pretty good bags. But sometimes, they miss something still. A little more thought into the already great bags could have made them the best available on the market. Pity.

Oh yeah, I also realized the top compartment doesn't have small pockets to put small stuff. It's just a empty space.... Looks weird....

That is also why I like ThinkTank. Some of the designs may look too plain. But a lot of thought goes into the placement of pockets, compartments and layout. I find Thinktank to be one of the most well laid out products. Pity they do not offer backpacks with quick draw and space for other stuff. I think their target segment is the mostly professional shooters.

how about lowepro photo sport 200AW?

its has the following features:
- quick side camera access
- top compartment for personal stuff
- side pocket for water bottle --> important!!
- front pouch for maps etc
- hydration slot that can probably fit in a netbook or ipad
- many straps to hold/secure stuff externally including tripod

it also looks like a regular hiking backpack instead of boxy looking camera bags...

U can try vanguard adaptor series, unfortunately doesnt have water bottle pocket but it has top pocket where i think u can put ur water bottle and some things. Check in SLR REVOLUTION, i bought yesterday the Vanguard Adaptor 45 for S$105 only.
