for comments: using 28 - 300 lens with D90

I think his point was that if a D5100/D90 with 18-200 combo can do a job of similar quality, why choose a FF camera with the 28-300.

But if you have a FF camera and want to change lens less, then the 28-300mm is the lens that can cover a huge range. But if you have a DX body, unless you are find with the 28mm..

There is no right or wrong, but more on affordability, whatever makes you comfortable. I use 28-300mm on my D90, but I do find the 28mm lacking in some way, but I only use this lens outdoors and for travel. Indoors I would use my 50mm or 85mm prime.

If people can shoot 70-200....why not 28-300 on DX? TS just need another lens to cover his wide end....maybe 14-24 if his roadmap is FF :)
