oh no brother, dun tempt me...haha! actually i always wished there was grids on the viewfinder like the nikon d90. envy my d90 friends who got the built in grid thingy on their view finders which they could juz happily turn on and off unlike us. the grids are gonna be useful, but i dun think i wanna install it myself. haha! i'll probably go down to CSC tmr and just ask them "how ah?". moral of the story - don't be itchy finger. damn. i dun even know why i wanna clean it when its not even dirty. -_-"

Well. Human only learn from their own mistakes. :bsmilie:

Actually its pretty easy and the screen is not as fragil as some might think. Just dun touch the surface i.e. always hold it by the side. If you want CSC to do it, maybe you can buy the part from them, rather than going to showroom then CSC. Your best bet is to call CSC.

You have to buy from Canon Vivocity and then get in install FOC at CSC. I have done it a few times and you can't buy from CSC.

Thanks for the clarification.

cool. i just went down to CSC just now. got the focusing screen replaced there for $30. it came back with lesser dust...but still got dust. =( there are some tiny black specks on my viewfinder...ard 4-6 tiny bits. is it normal? cuz when i first got my 50D, there was no dust or anything like that. everything was fine til i touched my focusing screen. sighs.

dust is part and parcel of DSLR, live with it, so long as it doesn't stop you from capturing your images. Even my rear elements of my lenses have dust. Esp when viewed with a very bright torchlight.

i'm trying to get used to seeing dust in my viewfinder. lol...yeah, gotta learn to love the equipment less and photographs more...its juz that the money spent on the equipment is very significant. but is it normal to see dust in your viewfinder? this dust is from the focusing screen. perhaps nxt time i'd send my camera for a total cleaning.

The dust you see in the vf may not be ar focussing screen. It could be at mirror or somewhere stuck in the vf housing

So if you want your vf free of dust view, you need to get them cleaned completely with extra cost

I changed the focusing screen in Jan 2009. There is dust when viewing from against a bright sky. But it does not affect the images as those aren't on the sensor. Sensor dust have a few spots, but only when stop to f/16 and below, with bright lighting and contrast adjusted then it will be visible. Else its ok with me.

View finder cleaning is $30, takes about 1 hour.

I would suggest TS not too worry about all the little dust here and there. Eventually, you will realized that no matter how careful you are, there will always dust present somewhere. Be it on the lens, inside the lens, on the filter, inside camera body, inside the view finder or on the camera sensor. As long as you keep it reasonably clean, you should try to overlook those dust and just concentrate on taking nice pictures. And, if it is really getting too dusty, then go to CSC and do a complete and proper cleaning.

yeah agree with CSTan on this. I used to worry about such issues but now i concentrate on taking better photos.

I was thinking of introducing you the EF-s focusing screen since I know you like your 50mm f1.4. Haha have fun and keep shoting.

EF-S screen is meant for manual focussing right? how is it differ to normal one?

hey guys thanks so much for the input. sent it for viewfinder cleaning, but there was still 3 specks (the size or smaller of a full stop here) left on the viewfinder, doesnt affect images though.

yeah i so agree with wad cstan says...time to stop worrying for equipment. i think i've been a tad too paranoid. this sorta given me the opportunity to be abit more rugged with my usage. haha!

once again thank u everyone for your advices, it's greatly appreciated!

Better learn from others' mistakes, cos there is simply not enough time in the world to make them yourself. :D

It made sure the focus is acurate & DOF preview button is more usable. Any front or back focus by a few notch you won't be able to tell on the normal screen. The main draw back is, any lens max aparture below 2.8 will be appear darker on the view finder. In fact, with a f2.8 lens I notice it is darker. With 18-200 at 200mm end with f5.6, the view finder became so dark that it is not usable indoors.

The default screen that comes with a new camera

Or go for 7D... grid lines on demand... leveler on demand... :bsmilie:
