Hello Adzz,

when is BS FOC?? Eng FOC is from 5th to 10th Jul

Oh, SBS.... :D
Other photographers? maybe you can ask your main comm about that. think he/she dont mind you asking.

No lah. Eng FOC aka Camp Insinyur wasn't that big till this year when there are new engineering course introduced in NTU and the increase in cohort intake. i had planned for my photogs to rotate shifts so they can take part in some of the activites as well. all work and no play is dull leh. FOC is a time to have fun.

Grp shots are nice! some actions are good too. but mainly it's the grp shots (be it posed or having the OG in action) that sells.

I was PVS member since year one. next year final year liaoz, so me "retiring" from ECAs to concentrate on studies. No. it wouldnt be too late to join up, but if you want to hone your skills, i suggest that you also join the publication comm of the major clubs (eg. BSC or CAC) where they have regular activities which need photo coverage.

Hi. I just talked to my pub head liao. She kinda like assigned her sub comms to each group (4 in total) to take photos within the group. I will be one that is mobile on my own, freedom to take any groups etc. She was thinking of using a analog camera too, but I somehow think it is not really needed. What do you guys think?

Haha, Dunno leh, I don't think I will enjoy the game. Probably think my job is flexible, can relax one. Haha! Relaxation will probably be coming from chatting with my friends. :) As what you pointed out, I think I should concentrate on group shots that sells, and less action shots unless I find them unique and interesting for my own personal keeping. So I guess the shots that we took, is under FOC, so we have a say in the images we took. Hehe... They were thinking of putting all the images in a CD and selling it. I am kinda against this idea though.

Anyway, as a member of the PVS, what is in for us? Will consider the point of joining other pub section. What is BSC BTW? Biological Science Club? ;)

I hope you get royalties for every CD bought & rights given to you... :)

Hehe! Do you have any image to show?

Haha! I doubt they will pay to hire a photographer. The sub comm have to own a camera or borrow one too to help out. Budget, :)

Well, no royalties and rights I guess? This is FOC event leh... School affair, I dont think its possible? Maybe Merv knows better with regards to school events. If they hire me, different story, but this is like my responsibilty as a subcomm too. So... Urgh! haha! But I guess I can choose which photos to burn for them, and which one to keep for myself. ;)

oops. my reply is within the quoted area.

One more thing, should I bring a tripod along? Or I can omit that? Hehe...

u can get a friend to be assistant and carry the misc stuff. :)

Clive just volunteered :D

Keke!!! Clive can take over me. I be the assistant and learn from you. :)

I just gotten the SB24 Flash. Seems to be working good, but one thing I notice is when I turn on the flash, it emits a soft high pitch sound like "eeeeeeee" constantly. Is this normal? Also, how many shots can 4 AA batteries last when used with flash?

That high pitch sound is the sound of the flash charging up, perfectly normal.

That's the capacitor charging up sound, pretty normal. You won't hear it during the shoot, cos the surrounding would probably be louder than that.

Depends on the power of the flash output during the whole duration, a good pair of fully charged AAs can last past 300 shots. :)

Don't mean to be rude at all, but you mean you have not used any flashes at all before, not even a whatever fully auto TTL one? I think you will have lots of problems with manual flashing.

You might want to use the built in flash. Serious.

Its ok, i dun mind it rude at all. :) Yup. this is the first time i tried the external flash, I am a 9 day old DSLR user. Hehe... I set my mode to auto on both the D70 and flash unit. Did the settings for metering range and f value, turn out quite well for my day photos, will try again at night to see if it works fine.

Probably I will do away with manual flashing, is there a difference in auto and manual? My auto mode allows distance (mm zoom) and f setting. The in built flash turns out to be poor, even in daylight when compared to the flashlight, under auto settings.

Then again, I will probably be using the external flash and auto setting on D70 in the evening and at night when lighting is poor.

I guess if you can understand how to use aperture auto modes, should be ok. Basically you don't even have to follow the exact settings, sometimes it is really agaration in this because the background changes and may fool things. If you can read the histo and highlights review ok, you should be safe. Just remember that you can save underexposure better than overexposure. Try again at night when there is not enough light. In day time, usually enough light and you just a bit of fill in can liao. But if you wanna accurately optimise the histogram and get pretty consistent results in exposure + speed, have to go D or i-TTL.

hehe. it would be too complicating liao in this case. I will stick to auto mode at night. :) and prob a in built fill in flash for the day. :)

So as what epsn said, 4 AA = 300 + shots... I guess I need only about 8 AA batteries?

so you have a portfolio online we can view? perhaps you can go into business gaffering for others. :bsmilie: :bsmilie:

also, depending on what you shoot, the kit lens might be a good one to use most of the time. it is lighter, so less fatigue on you. (you'll be tired if you carry a heavy setup all day)

and less drain on your battery as the lens won't hunt as must as the 70-300.

BSC - Biological Science Club

the royalty issue. most sub-comm have a sense of belonging to the camp and most of them dont really mind working without royalties for the benefit of a successful and memorable camp

photo sales. sale of photos are a source of income for the next camp. but you can't really charge an unreasonable fee. digital users tend to "spoil" the market by offering free photos on cd. another problem with cd is you can copy burn them. so you cant really sell photos on cd.
