Many thanks! Any Nikon (manual) users who have tried or use Contax (manual) glass too? Like to first habd account of how the two systems compare.

I am also an FM3A user. Used to have a F90X, then saw the match needle of the FM3A, can't resist the temptation and bought a black one. That was two years ago. I liked it so much that I bought another Silver one recently.

Lovely camera, small, lightweight, and really nice to use. The only thing I miss is spot-metering and the higher end-point of F90X.

Sold off all of my AF stuffs already, left with only my beloved 105 AFD Micro. Now with 28/2.8, 50/1.4, 200/4, 45/2.8P, all primes, all AIS, all light and beautiful.

I ama sucker for old-styled stuffs!

Hi glchua. Glad to know you're enjoying the camera. I'm also thinking of getting the chrome one as a backup of sorts. Guess I count as a sucker for old-styled stuff too. BTW, I've just visited your gallery and really enjoyed the photos of your children. And your macro shots are just lovely and inspiring, 'coz I bought the FM3A for macro photography. :) Is the softbox the Lumiquest Softbox II? Any tips for this newbie on macro photograhy with the FM3A? Many TIA.

Good to know another sucker of these stuffs!

Thanks for your comments. Actually, I'm still learning and experimenting.

It is the Lumiquest Softbox, but I think it is the older version. There is also a small version but it is not that. That was when I just started out and still using this technique to do insect shots when I didn't carry a lot of stuff. What I do is that I fix a SB28 on the camera and attach this softbox. It will bring the light source close to the subject if you are doing 1:1 or 1:2. The effect is close to a ring-flash but have a more natural shadow. Not good though for vertical shots as the shadow would be to the side and this makes the lighting unnatural if you are picky.

I had a Newton Flash bracket that allow me to flip the flash for vertical shots. Still improving on it (findinding time to fix some bends and screws etc) to get good lighting for macro.

Depends on what sort of macro photography you want to do, the technique may be quite different. Anyway recently there was a member here that posted a very good article for Nikon macro photography. Check that out, it's really informative:

huh, why all FM3A users like to "suck" old stuffs??? :dunno:
:D

I use FM3A and I collect old stuffs but I am not too old a person rubric thought I was....

glchua, I adore your 45/2.8P lens, nice vintage chrome, matching lens for FM3A chrome body. How much you paid? I thought of getting one too, more for collecting purposes.

Yeah, 45/2.8P is a beautiful lens that is beautiful on the chrome FM3A. Tiny too, even with hood on, you can slot it in a small pouch. Not as sharp as my 50/1.4 AIS though at all comparable apertures (despite what many people say). The "legendary" bokeh was also not so impressive to me. I bought it at the lower end of $500 when it just appeared.

I wouldn't sell it though, a kind of a collection for me too.

BTW, I also have two more old stuffs: a Canonet QL17 GIII (quiet) and Konica Auto S3 (small). But I don't like rangefinders so I rarely use them.

I intend to get one as well but eyeing on a used. I don't think the warranty has much use unless the camera has a factory fault. If camera is damge by users fault, I don't think it will be repaired free of charge.. or do they??

Spicegirl990:

Sometimes they do. At least I know Canon does! My 3 year-old son dropped my Canon S45 into the drain while he is taking picture. Dented the front of the lens housing and filled the lens with water. I sent it to Canon expecting a $200 repair. They cleaned it up , checked it and give it to me in less than a week, FOR FREE!! Of course my warranty was voided after that. If not because I'm into manual focus, I would not be using Nikon, some bad experiences that I don't want to mention here with Nikon Singapore. Will start a thread soon though.

Anyway, buy used, it is a robust camera that should not have serious faults even second-hand.

45/2.8P lens is truly a work of art: pure, simple and minimum. I really can't resist the chrome plated lens and cannot imagine how gorgeous it will look on my FM3A chrome.

But, this lens is not cheap!!! Now should be close to $580... I wonder if anyone or anywhere selling this lens cheaper, new or second hand. :dunno:

Decided to get it from CP as it's the most convenient and reputable. Paid $1030 for the black body, chrome will be $980. If it's expensive, pls don't tell me. ;p I was eyeing a few minty secondhand ones but decided to get a brand new one as I intend to use it as my main camera from now on, and having a Nikon warranty would be good, in case anything happens (touch wood)! AP was selling both models for for $100 less than CP, but theirs is parellel import (1 year shop warranty), and their Nikon warranty ones cost $80 more tha CP's. TCW also selling parellel import/grey market one for $930 (chrome) and $980 (black). HTH. Get one quick! ;p
P.s: The beau-ti-ful flat profile, silver 45/2.8 goes for an astounding $550. Can't afford that!

Just curious..
Why is the chrome one cheaper??

just joined the ranks of FM3A users
coupling my blackie w/ a 35-105mm f/3.5~4.5s..

yet to test it out tho..

*steep learning curve ahead...*

Congratulations!!

Jherek, good for u! I just shot a wedding this afternoon with the FM3A and two primes and it was a joy to use. Somehow, shooting manual suits me better than AF, as I can just meter a mid tone, choose the shutter speed and recompose, all in the matter of a split second, without having to half-depress the shutter button. Doing the latter used to drive me stir crazy. :p
