Just some addition to an old thread. I tested a Minolta 3600 HSD on my A33 and it fires off almost instantly in A-mode. Red-eye: Off, Fill-flash selected.
As I mostly shoot in A-mode, I find that setting to rear flash (with camera on board flash) will make the flash fire almost instantly as well. Fill-flash mode is always annoyingly delayed. I know the "consequences" of using rear flash for longer exposures, but in A-mode, shutter speed with flash is always between 1/60 - 1/160s so that effect is negligible most of the time. I have now switched to using rear flash instead of fill-flash.
