Flare in IR filter

Kinda embarassing to display my first IR shot here.
Just testing the Cokin today and I realized that there's a lot of flaring.
How do I overcome this problem? Also comment on any improvements on workflow or settings.
(Forget about the composition, just trying this out downstairs my place)
Can't put my lens hood on with the Cokin..

350D + EFS 10~22mm + Cokin Wide angle adaptor + Cokin P007 IR

Ask Ark19 to modify your filter to screw-mount kind, like any other filter.

Nothing to be embarrased about, everybody has to start somewhere.

I should say that that's a very good first attempt. Exposure is fine, sharpness is there.

There is no way you can put your lens hood over the square cokin filter. As Max suggested, get it modified to a screw on round filter, very good and easy to use after modification.

As for workflow, it a matter of personal preference. What you have is alright as long as long as you like it. But then with some editing the pic can be further adjusted.

Here's my attempt with some adjustments on your pic.

What I did.
- masked the sky in the original to work on the rest of the picture
- reduced the reds in the trees to get the resultant white foliage
- reduced slightly the blue and magenta in the HDB blocks and the foot path
- added a blue sky with some clouds.
- merged the layers
- slight "S" curve to enhance the contrast
- slight sharpening for the final result

Is it the gap between the Cokin adaptor / ring that is allowing light to seep in?
Or is it low flaring resistance of filter? I'm just ordered a Cokin GND+4 and I'm now beginning to wonder if the same flaring would occur as well.

Hi Hoky,
if u want to use the square cokin filter, don't use the adapter.
Instead, hold the filter directly over the lens.
Also try to have the sun behind u...

Does it mean that all creative filters fitted with the Cokin filter holder have a tendency to flare?

I have a bad feeling with the GND I ordered now.

I think GND is fine. I'm using a Tian Ya one. But IR shoot is more light sensitive.

Yo.....!! i am facing the same problem as you..... it is the gap between the Cokin adaptor / ring that is allowing light to seep in... try cover the gap up with a black thick cloth will do the trick...

I juz made myself a "cover" for the filter holder. Yet to try it out.

The X system is not easily available in Singapore. You may have to try videography stores to get it. I got myself a P wide filter holder instead.

The Wide angle filter holds one 1 filter whereas you can stack up to 3 with the normal P holder. But there's a higher risk of vignetting with it.

The biggest difference between the wide angle and the standard holder is that the wide angle can hold only 1 filter whereas you can stack up to 3 on the standard.

Anyway, today I tried taking more Infrared shots with my paper cut shade around the filter holder... It's still showing signs of flaring... Looks like I have to make a "hood" for it.

thanks man! you're making me thinking of getting this. the 77mm R72 filter is like $250.00 new. haha too ex for me as a hobbist. hee hee
