For your #2, I would either go near the water area and shoot or goes higher glass ground area where those ppl fly kite there to shoot. This will eliminates those distraction stuffs shown on your photo # 2

Look around the nightphoto forum. There are some CS member showing their photos with the EXIF data on their photos. use that as reference on what exposure settings to use. Take a look at bro Zola70 photos taken at barrage. the settings are there printed on the photos.

For me I will use:
Cam on tripod. no flash. 2 second timer release.
ISO 100 or 200
Aperture F8~F11
Shutter 5 to 15 seconds. You probably need to trial and see.
WB auto or cloudy
Picture style - Landscape

Hi, I was there recently, too.

My general settings:
ISO100
Aperture Priority Mode, set to the smallest aperture possible that will allow a 30 to 25s exposure.
Vibration reduction OFF (this is important, no matter what the brand)
Remote release
And exposure compensation -0.3 to -0.7ev (maybe you'd like to bracket your shots downward: +/-0ev, then -0.3 and -0.7)
And a good, solid tripod is a must. The cheap ones wobble and it only takes a minute vibration to ruin the shot.

Maybe as practice, you can just try shooting from the window of your own home at night, and tinker with the settings until you're satisfied with it. :)

My photo set is here.

looks sharper now. what did u do? btw u might want to try to increase the shutter speed to lower the exposure. abit too bright for night shoots.

Yeah, these few days a bit hazy, and the night lights illuminate all the smoke particles in the air, making it a bit more difficult to achieve a clean, crisp night shot. I think if want a real good quality night shot, no choice but to wait until this haze clears...

Went back there to give a 2nd TRY !

I feel that its sharper than my first day.. what you guys think.. but exposure i still need to practice more i guess.
Sorry but why set your ISO to 400 when you have a tripod for long exposure? :dunno:
Hmmm... This may be the cause for overexposure.

ISO400 is not the problem here. It will only introduce more noise. Exposure of 1st pic is ok because he used shutter priority. The problem with 2nd & 3rd pic is that he didn't have a good grasp on the basics of photography but yet die die want to shoot in manual mode.

why am i suspecting someone didnt check his ttl meter?:/

k some points:
ur reshooting photos
pic 1 i like the light beam thingy. very chio tat one u shld keep up. night photography is all abt light. if u dun have nice light u pretty much dun have night photography.

pic 2: overexposed. u manually exposed the image right? yea. anything with shutterspeed more than 30s on a 450d is pretty much unmeterable. u kinda gotta count urself. trial and error lor.

pic 3.... lol. i shall see how others comment first.

and yea i kinda agree with the guy before me. not the tone though:x ziploc relax lol. at least he made the effort to ask. dun need suan till like that:D

and yea. brush up on ur basics:D take more learn more! JIAYOUS

It is not to suan him but to state the fact. If you have paid attention to his postings, you would have noticed that he had asked many very basic questions. Through out those posts many members had helped providing answers and requested him to read up his camera manual & books about basic photography. Many of his questions can simply be answered by just reading up, but yet he chose not to listen. It is good to be helpful and I fully support that. But to someone who just expect spoonfeeding and refuse to do his homework, I would say go fly kite.

That is why a lot of us did not even start mentioning about Composition. ;p

hehe explain fly kite LOL

hey ts u heard that? go read up first! having a dslr isnt equal to being a pro luckily. or else some ppl here dun need tan jia already.

slowly read bah. night photography not easy one. i think u start of learning film better:D if u can use film u can go anywhere!

btw library got loads of photography books. go rent some. i find those from national geographic being quite informative. u can also read other ppl threads and learn too!

hi guys newb here..
for canon how bout the long exposure noise reduction turn to auto for night photography..
will dat make a diff?

dude dun even bother. u just end up with black dots which kinda screws u up as good as noise. is it that hard to just use a good old iso 100 + f8.0 + i dunno. 1min worth of exposure time?

=.=

i went to taiwan and it was freezing and i looked like an oddity standing by the river and i stood for like 2 mins per shot

and i still could get decent photos =.=

learn long exposure dude. BIG TIME.

hehe..thanks for the tips.
was trying very hard to get a good pic but the sky was jus too noisy.
tried with diiferent aps, shutter and iso speed..
but the sky keep wiinning with the noise..haha
guess didnt do my homework b4 set out and didnt quite understand my cam capability.
too exited ,jus go out n shoot shoot shoot...
well lesson learnt..

night photography is like that one lar. each senario is each one's own settings. i had a hard time too:D so relax bro ur not alone.
usually i will just trial and error. iso 100 is a must for me at night. since i gonna take long exposures low iso means no noise.

my 450d canon could handle low iso. iso 100 u wont get noise:D

maybe u can show us a photo of what u took? might help in understanding the problem:D

(and i suspect ur noisy sky might just be a mistaken case of light pollution? need to see ur photo then can know)

IMG_0042_1.jpg

is this sky noisy? :(
mirror is up.
2sec shutter release.
IS off .
set to MF.
Long exposure noise reduction disable.
lowest iso 100.
auto lighting disable.
am i missin' anything?
btw ho u guys MF in low light area?

:dunno:

o.o the sky looks clean to me...

usually if noisy is whole pic noisy one. cannot be just sky noisy
usually if i wanna find noise i simply go the darkest parts of the pic and stare hard. since noise is due to no light then camera anyhow act smart try detect. tats what happens when u go high iso. i think quite ok. since ur sky looks clean and the darkest parts which is ur sea also noiseless

if u wanna manual focus in low light area (isnt it jsut the same as normal or u mean u cannot see clearly cause its too dark)
flip on ur liveview (if u have any)
zoom in all the way using ur live view (since u using tripod u shldnt be worried abt shakes)
focus until ur liveview shows a nice sharp image

shoot away:D

IMG_0025_1.jpg

here another shot .the noise is killing me..:o
shot wat taken a 11pm
same setting as the prev one.
scene is to0 dark to MF tried using liveview still too dark to see anything even when temporarily switch to hi iso.MF by *aggaration*.
is there a best way for sharp MF.
thanks for the c & c.

yea got LOL

i told u liao. flip on ur live view
use the liveview zoom function
then u focus based on ur lifeview

cause roughly what u see focused is also what u get focus. just use ur lifeview to zoom lar. then focus base on it.
