First lens for a Leica M9

yes, all the websites get paid by someone. Who would write bad about their biggest advertising customer, for example.
By reading many different sides, and extracting the bit of truth from each site ( which is not so easy) , everyone is forming it;s own opinion.
For me , for examples, the target is always the sharpest picture , in the highest possible resolution . Maybe because I did a lot of Large Format when I was young.
But then....thats just me . There are people who are crazy about these LOMO cameras , to me , this equipment is almost an insult to countless engineer who tried to develop sharper , higher resolution cameras and lenses.
So, thats just an example, how different people see photography. ;) .
I can only say, if you are happy with the lens , and the results you get, it was the right decision, no matter what other people say.

What newbies should get is Erwin Puts' Leica Compendium new edition. That tome is the bestest and most comprehensive text on leica. Expensive book but I highly recommend it.

I second that... very useful too, esp when it comes to insomnia and film curl! :bsmilie:

thanks for all the good advice guys..

It has been very useful for a RF newbie like myself.

With these, I have just bought the M9-P and 50 Summilux (chrome combo ;p) at Raffles Leica this week. Thumbs up for the wonderful service at Raffles as they took time to explain the RF features very thoroughly to me!

Oh ya, I got a small discount at Raffles too, and a SD card. :):):)

Congratulation on your purchase. A great X'mas present and no doubt you will be out, even in the rain to proof the sharpness and clarity of this Summilux. Lucky you, I got my system from them too, but they would not give even a cent discount as others would be only too eager to jump the que if I don't want it, then, so they claimed.

Yes, present from the wife!

As for discount, it depends who you speak to. I got different response from different staff. I thought I was pretty fortunate to get chrome versions at a discount when they are so rare.

I have taken some shots at home and I am amazed by its sharpness especially without a bounce flash! As for outdoor, I am still waiting for my half-case (with its in-built grip) to arrive before I bring it out. The body is too smooth and without a proper grip, it just doesn't feel secure.

I was fortunate to buy my choice prime Summilux-M 35mm together with the M9 from Leica Raffles yesterday at a reasonable price.

As for the next lens that I'm eyeing,...Summicron 90mm APO ASPH.......just found out it is also a difficult lens to come by in the marketplace:C

i think there was one this week, being sold for 5k... u just need to search.

Beg to differ, There are 2 Zooms that were made of which 1 is discontinued . -- - WADEs . They are pretty good !

My Sincerest Apologys - Goofed. The Wades ARE NOT ZOOMS . They are Lens with 3 fixed focal lengths

Only half-goofed.:)
WATE is zoom; MATE is not.:)

Wah. Lucky few to get the 35mm Summilux FLE so quickly. Some bros I know in the forum had to wait months to get their pre-order sets.

I was also looking at 90mm focal length. I hear great things about the 90mm Macro-Elmar F4. Super compact, beautiful bokeh shot wide open, bitingly sharp when stopped to moderate apertures, and the ONLY 90mm that has a minimum focus distance of 0.8m - 0.5m if you use the magnifier. Tempted to get it as part of my 2-lens travel combo as it costs way under $4000. But hard to find.....:(

I don't know why this thread got a random bump but I finally found the reason. I must show my wife-to-be this thread too =X

Thank you larrytok for your kind pointers,...I'm still in the process of locating a 90mm APO summicron.

I did not have plans to pick up more than 2 prime leica lens (35mm & 90mm) for my M9, as I will still rely on my EVIL EP2 to cover other photography needs.

I admit that I was fortunate to get my hands on a M9 and 35mm lux together a week ago.
My first close encounter of the 1st kind was in 2009 when I was presentated with the steel grey M9 body in Cathy Photo. I did not have the desire to purchase due to the fact that I was told that buying leica M lenses was new was not readily available generally. So after 2 years, the funny through was that my trip to Leica store 2 weekends ago was planned to ask the leica guys why there is such a shortage of 35mm lux new ( I've made up my mind to pick up a 35mm lux and use it as a wide + all rounder lens to skip the 50mm lux as std lens,...perhaps my past habit for relying on 28mm and 135mm Carl Zeiss on Contax SLR during my school days has shaped my .....) and to my pleasent surprise, I was instead greated with my wish that both M9 and 35mm lux were available on the spot! After 5 seconds in a daze, I reached for my credit card and the rest was history.

These days, I've been depending on my EVIL EP2 + 14mm - 150mm zoom as a lazy photo taking tool for a while with all my middle age excuseses of being busy with work, family and passion for cars (my other life long hobby and bad habit).

Now, I'm learning to fall back to manual focusing again and learning to take portrait with 35mm lux wide open before I can get hold of a 90mm APO cron to complete my leica M series toys......if I do not fall in love with the other M series lenses between now and then:)

Although many 35mm shutterbugs would concur that the 35mm lens is the prefered all rounder (that was why I bought it as my first lens on my M9),....I still find it hard to live without a potrait lens tele and someting wider for dramatic compositions.

While I patiently await for the 90mm summicron-M availability, I have started falling for the 21mm super elmarit-M,...my bad habits die hard.

Someone has posted a 90 summicron for sales in B&S.

Thanks lowjason. Gotten my 90mm summicronm m, now to get 21mm s elmarit m...;)
