First impressions of the Fujifilm X-S1

Wow, the picture quality really impresses me. I read the other review on the Fuji HS30 on this board, and I was disappointed by the image quality.Even in the jpeg compressed pictures on the website show clear visible chromatic failures . To me, the HS 30 is just another useless feature packed toy. But the image quality X-S1 looks great . It really takes highly usable ( mean printable) pictures over the whole zoom range .

Good review / great camera

is it worth it? used a 4/3's cam b4. dunno shld i upgrade to dslr or this?

i would not quite consider the Fujifilm X-S1 as a substitute to an DSLR system... but the key thing about the X-S1, is that you will not get a 26x zoom lens in such a compact size on a APS-C or FF DSLR. with the m43 system, you can cover this range (24mm-624mm) roughly with the 14-42mm and the 45-200mm or the 14-140 and the 100-300...

it is hard to "prescribe" one as being better than the other, but among these 3 systems / cameras, you have to consider your own balance among image quality, convenience, size and weight, etc.

super thank you cactus jack! i think i shld upgrade to a dslr for long term use :)

i forgot to mention price as a consideration, but if you have spare cash or depreciate your investments over the long-term, then it shouldn't be too much of an issue.

the DSLR is a good option. but just to clarify, the Fujifilm X-S1 is bridge camera, which is a camera that is suppose to help "bridged the gap" between point-and-shoot cameras and DSLRs. Because of the convenience of the superzoom, many people like to use bridge cameras as travelling companions. a FF or APS-C DSLR, with an arsnal of good lenses will knock the sock off the bridge cameras in terms of image quality, and that will have implications on your bank account, and possibly your shoulder and back when lugging around your lenses. You would also be hardpressed to find 1 or even 2 good lenses to help you cover the 24mm-624mm range (e.g. 18-200, 50-500).

as for P&S cameras, they are nice and compact and cam slip nicely into your pocket of pouch, but they usually lack the range, functionality and versitility that a bridge camera can offer... the M43 is an interesting one, as it comes very to a DSLR in a smaller and more compact kit.

i don't want to make this sound like a bad marketing pitch for the X-S1... but this is afterall a review of the X-S1. i think that the Fujifilm X-S1 does stand above the other bridge camera because of its (dare i say) superior lens-sensor combination : the Super Electron Beam Coating (EBC) Fujinon 26x 24-624mm (35mm equivalent) lens and the "larger" 2/3" 12 megapixel EXR CMOS sensor.

ppl how know me, know that i'm a prime shooter who typically travels with 2 of either a 28mm, 35mm, or 50mm lens. would i buy a bridge camera?... well, it's not quite how i shoot. if someone were to ask me which camera should they buy? i'd be lost as to where to start, compact, mirrorless, bridge, DLSR... there is "no one size fits all" best camera. if someone were to ask me which bridge camera i would recommend... well, coming up with that answer is lot easier.

Thanks so much for ur knowledge. I myself are into prime lenses coz its light and sharp images :)

I also would like to thank you for the review.

Helps me with my current belief DSLR's still are the right system for me.

I love the mega zoom range, but I usually shoot indoors or at night, so prefer the f1.4 and wide angle lenses DSLR systems have. In fact, even thinking of selling my 55-300mm.

Hi, anyone know which shop still sells XS1 in Singapore?
Quite cheap on Amazon taking into consideration shipping, taxes, GST etc but could not be exported to Singapore...
Very addicted to the zoom and the EXR sensor, wanna grab hold of it before it becomes extinct!

its best you get directly with the stores on availability. as an alternative, you may also want to consider the new FinePix S1 which was announced at the CES in Jan, touted as "the world's first weather-resistant bridge camera", with 50x image stabilized optical zoom (24-1200mm equivalent, f/2.8-f/5.6 ), 16.4 megapixel 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor, and wifi connectivity http://www.fujifilm.com/news/n140106_03.html

went for XS1, bought online from US, i believe not covered by local warranty, but at $500+, the risk i have to take with no warranty cover. Harvey Norman still selling at $1000+.
Really like it  !
