First footage from the new Sony A7s

So a A7s with a Atmos Ninja and the battery grip should be a pretty good setup for high quality 4k video.

But please launch a 4k A-Mount Sony camera with uncompressed HDMI out Sony... Tired of loads of E mount cameras and AVCHD :(

Pros:
1. The Camera is super light and small
2. The ISO is madness ... Look at the 5000iso in the temple. ZERO noise
3. Full Frame
4. Crazy sharp images that beats the crap out of GH4
5. S-Log2, Alot of people don't see the amazing results this gives. It actually looks like 14 stops of dynamic range with this

Cons:
1. Need external recorder like the new Atmos Shogun 4k which might make it abit bulky and ineffective for run&gun
2. Might need you change your whole lens range unless you want to do adapters for M43 or EOS lenses.
3. Unknown rolling shutter as demo doesn't show it, not sure if they didn't want to show it cause its pretty terrible like their recent AX1 (4K camcorder)

...light sensitivity of up to ISO 409600...

Whoah, king of low light. :o

Yeah, the lack of shots with movement makes you wonder if they're trying to hide something :bsmilie:

Yup, I was looking for the Jelly O too.
Have to wait for some panning samples.

Atomos Ninja doesn't record 4k, the new Shogun does.

Atomos said the combo would be around $5k. Is it worth then?

Under 2k USD, the Shogun is pretty good deal for a 4k HDMI monitor/recorder.
Interestingly the 4k HDMI output from Sony A7s is 8 bit whereas Panny GH4 is 10bit.

Here's a panning sample from filmmaker Andrew Wonder:

In the link above you can see a quick rolling shutter test I did at the Sony booth. Please correct me if I’m wrong, but unless I’m shooting trees or rocks I can’t imagine getting away with this jello effect on my productions.

I know this is a pre-production camera and maybe there is some way to help fix this before production but I find these results unacceptable. I just don't get it. Sony is so close on all fronts to making the perfect camera. From the NEX 5 on they have made absolutely beautiful and feature rich mirrorless cameras that would be perfect for intimate video work but model to model these cameras have been plagued with bad compression and terrible rolling shutter.

I know jello is to do with sensor... but possible to correct in post or software?

Expected horrible Jello and Rolling Shutter ... Heavily suspected as they purposely didn't show any panning ...

The problem with rolling shutter is that is very hard to fix cause every Panning is at different speed and sometimes, those panning contributes to compression artifacts.

Does anybody know if the FS700R will record 4K out through HDMI with the Atomos Shogun? Enquired with Atomos Dealer here Profi Enterprise and they said it will be out 3rd quarter this year.

Let's bring a lego figurine in a shoebox for testing at Sony this Sunday!

Low light is nice but what's the noise like? I wonder how many of us would shoot in moon light all the time?

I rather Sony make a FS-700 4K in a7s body. Lol

I’ve been in Singapore this week covering the Broadcast Asia show and for the duration of the trip I’ve had a production model a7S with me on loan from Sony. In that time I put together the 37 minute long review you see above. I’ve tried to be as comprehensive as possible shooting in as many real world situations as I could. For me this gives a truer representation of the abilities of the a7S than just filming in a pretty location with ideal lighting.

In this review you will see low light footage, Standard Picture Profile and Slog2 ungraded and graded shots. There is also a clip demonstrating the rolling shutter and a couple of small clips showing 60 and 120P slow motion. You will also get a full look at the menu system and functions. All my test footage was recorded in the camera to SD cards in XAVC HD because I didn’t have access to 4K recording device. The footage at the start shot by Den Lennie was originally shot in 4K but is shown in HD here.

One of the most eye opening things for me was seeing my a7S footage professionally graded. I’ve included a screen cap of it being manipulated in Davinci Resolve 11 by a colourist at Broadcast Asia.

The A7s is quite unique for a hybrid stills/video camera because it bucks the trend of going for ever increasing megapixels. Instead Sony have used a full frame 12MP CMOS sensor – which results in increased low light sensitivity and dynamic range. This camera really is the new low light king – I can say that without a shadow of a doubt.

I tried shooting into a black freebie tote bag at Broadcast Asia and the A7s was noise free on a 46" HDMI well into the ISO 200,000 range. Voodoo.

wah... can't wait for it to be available for rent.. then can go play

The high ISO is incredible yes. With native ISO at 3200 on XAVC, it is bordering on being unusable commercially in broad daylight.
How many of us really shoot in moonlight conditions all the time? But indoor and night scenes, incredible.

Yes. Agree w the sentence 'unusable commercially'. Even if there is, the market is very niche.
