I'm thinking of getting started with RF digitally.

can i still get the epson rd1s in Singapore? Any idea how much?

What are the recommended lenses to go with the camera and Where to get them?

I think there is still one piece at Camera Workshop. As for how much, it's best to ask them personally.

If you are a little adventurous and have a few days of leave to spare, I can tell you where to buy in Japan. And total cost including airfare will come up to slightly more than what you can get else where.

That's provided that you don't mind flying by North West and sleep in 3500 yen capsule hotel and eat 350 yen noodle for 3 meals a day. That was how I survived Tokyo at a shoe string budget.. and still catch a glimps of the sakura . :bsmilie:

Anyway... I do carry a full range of CV lenses. As for which lens would be good, it all depends on your requirement. If you are a SLR user, ask yourself... which focal length do you normally shoot in. If you shoot scenery most of the time, then you can get either the 21mm, 25mm or 28mm to go along. As R-D1s has a crop factor of 1.5, the 21 & 25mm lens will appear as ~31 & 37mm respectively, which will be good for scenery.

If you shoot portrait, waist level shots, the you can try the 35mm/f2.5 PII or 40mm/f1.4 which will appear as 52mm or 60mm. Well, if you don't mind the "tightness" it's also a good general lens to bring along for a holiday, if you are a "one-lens" person...

thanks for the reply. Apart from the lobang in Japan mentioned by chiif, i think the prices are quite similar...even to here in Europe.

Based on the usage and with the 1.5x crop factor in mind, I would be looking probably at a 21mm and 35mm. Any recommendations?

By the way, any good books, guides, techniques on range finders. I'm a newbie. I've always used a SLR.

Just shoot shoot shoot... and you will get better and better and better.... afterall, it's just another camera. Not much difference from SLR, still got to compose, set aperture, set shutter speed. But more things to worry than film.. white balance.

The 21mm/f4 would be a good lens to start if you shoot street and for travelling. It's small, light easy to carry around. Good optics and high contrast.

I from malaysia and I travel to Singapore like once a year - wife is from there and my parents live there.

Not sure if lobang is 成语. more like colloquial slang

The best resource for finding out about the R-D1 is the dedicated r-d1 forum on rff (www.rangefinderforum.com).

Rich Cutler has an exellent page on it here:

Since you are in Europe, you might want to consider buying it from Robert White: www.robertwhite.co.uk. They seem to have the best after-sales support for the R-D1 anywhere.

If you are going to go with the R-D1, please be aware that rangefinder alignment is often an issue. If its needs adjustment, Don Goldberg (DAG) is the man.

I also learned from Don what may be the most important tip when using the R-D1:
When focussing for a shot, accurate focus is best achieved by pulling the focus in from FAR to NEAR, not the other way around.

The alignment thing is it a problem for the R-D1 only or it is also a problem with the R-D1s?
