It all depends on you. For me, I would use a protective filter on all my lens! I already spent quite alot on the lenses and the filters are just little more to protect my investment.

Some of the Voigtlander lens has 43mm or sizes that are not common in the Market. As a result they are very expensive (2-3 times more).

Therefore its cheaper to buy a step down ring eg. 43-49mm or 43-52mm lens and get a 49/52 mm filters. if you need a lens hood use a rubber one which is also not ex for 49/52mm.

Should be able to get the step up ring from a Rangefinder shop in #02 Lucky ChinaTown.
(I bought my from US ebay cos at that time Spore does not have 43-49mm step down ring)

But then he will not be able to use the original VC metal hood which comes with the lens and are usually quite nice and the lens cap goes over the hood.

My recommendation is to buy the 43mm filter anyway. The hood has it's own thread on the outside of the barrel independant of the filter thread. I ordered mine (Hoya) from Ruby and collected it next day. Not too ex for hoya < $30.
