film selection

Hi all,

I am very new to film photography. The last time I touch film was 10+ years back using a compact film camera since then I been using digital.

Quite lost touch with the types of color films available on the market now.

Is there a website that let's me compare all different color films available (if possible sample photos)?

For black/white, I will be going for Kodak Tri-X... will try Iford films too someday.

Thanks for your time!

Hey! Hooray for shooting film once again!
:)

For myself, i will go to the lomography website to compare/see sample of photos/ for the films that i want to buy,

Other than this website, theres always google. Hahaha!

Anyway, if you want start back,
Why not look into expired colors negs like the Klik Max 200, sadly only 24exp tho,
I love the colors, and also Efiniti 200 (available at Triple D) $10/3rolls. :)

:)

Yea yea! I forget to mentioned that too!
:)

Have fun shootingggggg!

try out a few more b/w too. i found tri-x a bit too grainy for my liking, but maybe thats wat ur looking for. fuji neopan acros is very nice, very fine grain. i think t-max is similar too. i too am waiting to try out some ilford later on

for color negative, check out fuji reala, kodak ektar if ur looking for really fine grain. for cheaper film, i'd go for fuji superia, great value for money i think

and yup, lomography is one of the best sites to check out different kinds of film n how they look. im actually very curious to know which films are currently being manufactured, and which films have been discontinued. cant seem to find that info now. expired film is a bit unpredictable i guess, and i like to know what im getting unless i want the unpredictability :D

as far as i know, fuji: superia/superia x-tra, reala, neopan are being manufactured. kodak: ektar, tri-x, tmax are being manufactured too. correct if im wrong
so fuji pro, kodak gold, are discontinued?

Checked out the price before even thinking about using exotic/pro type film, they are really expensive now and prices keep going up!!:o
I have a 10+ rolls of Fuji Pro160s that I reserved for special events otherwise I stick to the regular/mass market Fuji Color Superia that are much more affordable.
Above are just mine personal opinion.
BTW have you got the Plustek?:)

yeah i think for colored films, fuji superia looks good. but i am more incline towards Kodak porta after seeing the sample photos haha

plustek seems quite expensive... paris silk quoted me plustek 7600i for $480

next question, where do u guys usually buy your films?

ebay? adorama/BH Photo? or other sources?

is it cheaper to buy from overseas then buy locally? I read that there is a shop Ruby... and as well as Cathay photo. How's the price compared to buying from overseas?

Ruby has okay prices and a wide (sic) selection. If you find shipping from other countries troublesome, Ruby would be your best bet. Adorama/BH all bought before, prices are cheaper but of course the hassle is also much more. The cost savings however may not be as much as most would think.

Sigh, my ektar prices through the roof. Want to buy also heart pain. =(

thanks! i will drop by Ruby when I happen to pass by.

just bought from ruby:
ilford hp5
kodak porta

from cathay photo:
kodak tri-x
fujifilm superia extra

1 roll each from the above... cost me $31! -.-

waiting for my contax 167mt to be delivered to me now haha

yah. will do bulk order once i found the film i prefer.

ah yes, i forgot about portra. havent tried that one out yet. im guessing its pricier than fuji superia.

i joined the lomography site n got a bunch of 'piggie' points :D which worked out to around a $20 discount on any purchase over $50 (USD). so i bought a bunch of b/w film (fuji neopan, 10 rolls) and it worked out to around $4 per roll (including DHL shipping). might be worth checking into. u get 10 points as a gift when u join lomography.com :P

If im bot mistaken, its definitely pricier than superia.

Hmmm piggie points.
I nver use it before! Whahahaha

wait for raytoei to organise another film MO

I think what shadowleong means is to buy a 100 feet bulk roll and roll them manually into the canister. There is a sunken cost of a bulk roller and a dark bag, but the cost savings will add up to quite a bit.

Bulk roll of Tri-X: $75
19 rolls of Tri-X: $152

there are bargains, but must be patient and be willing to buy bulk.

of coss many of us are casual users, so even if there is an increase in price, it is is still "affordable".

i moved from tri-x to neopan. And currently, I am stuck with more 100 iso film than i can remember.

In my opinion, Kodak Plus-x is pushable but tends to flare a bit, FP+ is grainy as a 100 film, but in a good way.
Fuji Acros 100 is very clean, modern and sharp. But the one which I recently took a fancy
is the Fomapan 100.

I bought 20 rolls from Freestyle at Usd1.70 a rolls of 24 exposures. It was cheap as it recently
expired. I was thinking, nevermind, try it out. I was plesantly surprised by the tones, fomapan 100
deep to have a lot of tones, it isn't great for pushing but if i underexpose it, it doesn't get "muddy"
unlike other film.

here is a fompan100 shot, developed at fotohub. Straight default scan from my v600.

those who know me know that i don't shoot color.

however since 2012, i have started shooting with c-41 color.
initially i tried the cheapo kodak ultramax 400 available at Konota for 1.80sgd per roll expired.
but the orange color cast was scary.

I then tried Fuji Superia 1600 expired but exposed to iso 400. I like the neutral color.
I think superia 800 and 1600 has an effect that i like at iso 400 and will continue to explore this.
