Film for Long Exposure Night Scenes

Hi guys, I have been reading on the net that most films have colour shifts and reciprocity failures during long exposures. I am planing to use Velvia 50 for a night photo outing with my friends, but read some conflicting comments about this film. Exposure compensation is ok, but the colour shift part is confusing me. Some say to use a warming filter for exposures longer than a minute, some say use a Magenta filter etc. What filters do you guys usually use to shoot with the Velvia 50 for long exposures in the night?

Thanks:)

I know it is probably better to use Provia 100F or Velvia 100/F, but I am currently broke and only have the 50 left:(

Hi TS

I have the same concerns when i first try Velvia 50 on my sinar.. i brought my camera to work and try some night scene after work.. i think longest exposure is 12s...

don't care lah, just "hoot", no need filters one!

the colors come out ok for all my 3 slides done with expsore more than 1s.

but if yours not ok, pls don't blame me or whatever.. i am just sharing my experience..

Thanks, shall just experiment with different filters and timings, treat this as an experiment.

How long are you planning to expose? I've done up to 5-8 minutes and the color shift was probably too much to correct even with a filter.

Probably not longer than a minute after the compensation. I tried around 25 secs to 35 secs, will try to post the results after developing and scanning.

Unless your subjects involves skin tones, or products that are going to be used in marketing brochures (where color accuracy is important), color shifts is less of a problem, especially with night shots. Use the technical brochure for filter selection. Very few people go that far these days. To be accurate, you'll need a color meter, and a broad selection of color correction filters. And of course, the quality of your lab needs to be pristine.
