Film F5 vs. Digital D700 - Which do you think is better when you blow up your shot?

Technology is really amazing but...

How many percent of DSLR users print their photos bigger than 16in X 20in? :)

not many but i think that's not the point of the test...

if blowing it up to that size you get such great results from digital cams then surely for smaller print sizes that most mortals would use, the IQ would be just as better compared to film (although film do have their own reasons for using them)

Oh well, I agree..

Not only the technology is amazing but this is a good advertisement as well.

Back in 2004, the D70 already met or exceeded 35mm film in image quality for most applications. I jumped on the DSLR bandwagon and never looked back since. These people are slow.

My ideal test to settle it all :

the Dark Knight (selected action segments) - 70mm Imax FILM camera. (largest film format that's still in use now)

I'd like to see a digital sensor 70mm size, and a medium that can store lots of RAW DNG files (24 of frames of DNG in 1 sec of motion picture)

blow it up on IMAX screen (which we do not have in sg - nearest KL : Omnimax at Science Centre is different) and then compare film vs digital.

THEN tell me who is the winner.

They are slow alright.

Good advert though. Makes ppl believe that the D700 is fantastic, and then they will buy. ><

I thought we have one in Great World City?

I've seen enough IMAX film to know that they are grainy on that kind of screen size.. Most seem (visually) to be shot at ISO400. :dunno:

Anyway, we are comparing stills here but I do believe that RED might give a run for IMAX money with a smaller format with potentially cheaper optics than IMAX cameras.

haha. looks fun. but oh well :P theoretically film has higher capabilities cuz you're talking abt molecular sized particles vs that of the photosites on the digital sensor..
yeh, but how many molecular sized particles are needed to account for the dynamic range of the image at any point ;p... those particles are strictly (and ironically) speaking digital and discreet: exposed or not... there is no partially exposed... (and ironically also, a digital camera sensor is really analogue, where the analogue level of brightness has to be digitized to be recorded...)

there is RED's newly announced 645 and 617 format cameras, that shoots in RAW... coming in 1st quarter 2010... tech is still progressing :)...

Yeah.. really ironic that film is inherently digital and DSLR is inherently analog. ;p

I notice something.. Why is his D700 strap had "D700 FX" printed while mine D700's strap only says Nikon?

OT: ha ha... some1 at the shop swap your original strap for a cheong one

The video reminds me of a discussion I had with a colleague some years ago when I was saying digital will one day took over film, though not totally, but she insisted that film had way better quality and real work got to be done in film.

How I wish I can show her this video now but too bad she moved back to India and contacts lost.

That's what I thought, the consumer DSLR only have Nikon printed. Feel sad for blurrblurr

haha no worries lah... when Digital eventually become even more common and accepted amongst both professional and hobbyist users she will come to terms with the reality lah... even if you can are no longer in contact... who knows maybe she now using the latest D3 already! :bsmilie:
