fill flash for outdoor portraiture

hey guys, when using an external flash as fill flash for outdoor portraiture, do you use any other attachments to the flash (eg. lightsphere, omnibounce) or do you fire it straight on? and why?

I use "a better bounce card" as it gives a more natural looking fill light then when I used the omnibounce firing direct.

You should be able to make 2 out of one piece of the A4 size material. Go to the 2nd store behind the one facing the escalator (you can walk thru it) enter and its located to your left, 2nd or 3rd row. It comes in different colours too.

If you're out sloely for the purpose of taking portraits. Do use a reflector... gives a more natural look than any diffused flash.

bounce card most of the time, unless you're talking about big big distance, which doesn't apply because i don't really have any telephoto lens

why not straight on when closer? lighting will be too harsh, most of the time

Personally, it totally depends on the lighting condition.
There are times that even a 1/1 full flash from a 580ex isn't really enough to fill the front, i.e. a white subject in very harsh strong sunlight .

Outdoors, it also depends on the distance you are to your subject. lightspheres, omnibounce loses too much to be anywhere useful at distances greater than 5 min.

Thanks. Altho airfins directions abit :bsmilie: can't figure out. lol. Does the bounce card on a 580EX works the same as the "better bounce card"? Or does the latter spread out the light more evenly giving a more natural look? Just my guess since the latter is curved and the former is flat.

You have to watch the video on the website lah.The material is flexible for you to fold it to reduce the size when storing. Its very much bigger to bounce the light compared to the one in the flash.If I am not wrong the little bounce card is to create the catchlight only according to the instruction of the EX580II

lamination will have a very shinning surface therefore not good to bounce the light, you will be better off if you just use the paper alone, but it will be damage easily. You can visit the web site " A better bounce card " it teaches you how to DIY one
