My one and only Macro lens is the Tamron SP AF 90mm f/2.8 Di 1:1 Macro which doubles as my primary portrait lens

wow!! i see we have some 200f4s around... can't find (to buy) this lense anywhere!! have been wondering about its performance vs the t180.

preferred for convenience (and floral work) - 105VR
preferred for working distance - t180

Hi all

I am tempted to buy the Sigma 70-300mm Macro as the working distance is good for insect photography...

I am choosing that over the Nikon 105mm VR as I want a micro lens that can take flora as well as insects such as spiders, butterflies etc...

Currently i have only 1 lens that is a 18-200mm VR.

Do you think that the above choice is good? Let's leave $ out of this. I am ok with the purchase of any one of the above lens.

mine is the nikon 60mm f2.8 micro lens rather nice images with it without extension tube or anything

Been using the MF Tamron 90mm for more than a year. Great lens, only problem I had was I don't have metering with the D70s. If it had, I wouldn't have had to sell it. Will purchase the 105VR this week.

A couple of shots with the MF Tammy:

By any chance, have you heard or experienced using a Nikkor 85mm 1.4 with diopters (> +6) for macro work? I am wondering if I can buy that instead of the 105VR. I would love to use the 85mm 1.4 for portraits but can only afford to buy either one :D. Portraiture and Macro are my fave so I am torn. Kindly just PM (so as not to hijack the thread) me guys your thoughts or a discussion link if there's one as I can't seem to find any. Thanks.

the 105 u mean the nikon one arh? is it that one quite good i recommend

Using the Nikon 105mm VR lens for my macro shots. Kinda ex compared to the other lenses that avaliable but the build quality and shots taken by this lens is very good. Highly recommend it for macro work.

You should try the Sigma 150mm Macro f2.8
Some reviewed it as good as the Nikon 200mm F4.
Sigma 150mm Macro + TC 1.4X =225mm F4

I'd reccomend the 90 Tamron for those limited on the dough...

Excellent quality and ease of use... Check my link for pics labelled with Tamron 90mm. ;)

Any tips for macro? I always get my macro subject OOF.

I was using a 105 f/2.8 ED. Good lens man. I'm not so sure about the VR being very useful when you are doing a 1:1. Around 1:3 maybe. Think even Nikon says that the effectiveness of the VR reduces as you go towards 1:1. If I'm wrong, kindly correct me.

I am going to start using a Lester Dine 105 f/2.8. Fully manual lens but good images =)

U nikon users are so lucky to have the Zeiss ZF 100mm f2 lens that mounts directly to your nikon cam! Try it and get poisoned!

Practise your hand holding skills, use monopod, tripods, etc to get a stable shooting platform. Also if possible make sure the wind/breeze is not affecting the subject. Consider using materials like reflectors or yourself to block the wind if needed.

I would like to vote for Nikon AF-S Micro 105 f/2.8 VR. However, the line below indicates that I cannot vote... why?? How to vote.

AFD 105mm. lighter and sharp.
I do not use the AF/AFS or the VR during macro anyway. the extra ~ 200g is tedious for long outfied work
