Thats typical of all macro lenses...the aperture will stop down as you go down to macro level. Not sure how to explain it...happens to my friends 105VR as well as my Tokina 100mm Macro...
It's the light fall off from the lens as you go closer to the subject because the distance of the image plane to the lens will need to be further. So the apparent aperture is perceived to have decreased. It will not matter if you're using in camera metering but if you're using an external meter or non-TTL flash, you will have to compensate manually.

The only macro lens which doesn't exhibit this trait is the AF Zoom-Micro Nikkor ED 70-180mm f/4.5-5.6D

Hmm.. Not quite likely since the extension is quite significant. :dunno: You'll have to see if it has light loss or not because it will not report the aperture.

Thanks for the explaination guys.

i dont have the lens. but i think i read this somewhere which makes this lens rather different.

can actually tell if there is light loss by focusing on a constant spot to see if there is change in shutter speed when zooming. thus work out the amount of light loss./

Sigma AF 150mm f/2.8 APO EX HSM is a good macro lense too

Anyone tried the Nikkor 105 VR and non-VR versions? Comments?

I think alot of people here have both lenses... i tried the 105VR on numerous occasions (a friends lens).. all i can say that its

I know the 105mm (non-VR) is sharp. Borrowed one from a friend to try. Does the VR in the VR-version help much?

It is quite useful. Both in the application of macro as well as say shooting objects in low light in a distance away. The AFS is exceptionally fast for a macro lens and its silent too.

Heres a pic a friend of mine took using his 105VR : http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/49454494/

OMG! That is a lovely shot!!! If only the 105 VR cost less than 1k..............

I have a 105VR, very very good, great to keep in the bag just in case,

Rich

I used to have a 105 VR but sold it away since it's quite heavy to bring around. Bought myself a 60mm but i think i miss the superb quality & quiet focusing of the 105 VR! Damn! perhaps i should give it another try...

same, sold the VR and kept the 60mm.

can leave with it, too heavy for macro handheld.
noise i can live with, but the weight is nuts.
only thing over the 60 is the working distance.

i use the sigma 105mm 2.8 macro and i get good results

I am using the Tamron SP 90mm Marco Di. At its close focus the aperature is 5.6 compare to 2.8 at infinity. The Nikon 60mm marco went down to 5 and the new 105VR went down to 4.5 if i am not wrong. I can buy the 105VR no problem but choose Tamron due to weight and I intend to carry 5 Lenses for my next trip oversea.:D
