Faulty Battery for NEX5?

Hi there,

From my experience, DO NOT LEAVE THE FLASH ATTACHED to the camera for convenience sake.

Detach the flash unit when you are not using it.

Somehow it is consuming battery even when the camera is turn off.

Don't believe me, you can try ... and then report back your findings.

Cheers.
The flash is permanently attached to my NEX-5. I have not recharged the battery since last week. The last time I shot extensively with the camera was last Sunday. I still have 63% charge in the battery when I just check it. I don't think that the charge has dropped at all since last Sunday.

hmmm now im also experiencing this "battery drain" prob... as of last week it was still ok... wonder why this is suddenly happenin

3rd charge for me. been holding charges well. in fact yesterday i checked it was 78% left, checked today its 75%, best thing is.... i forgot to off, the power switch is at ON position. so it has been on sleep mode.

i suggest u bring back to get them test it for you. lithium hold charges very well should deplete very slowly on its own.

This morning was 100% freshly charged, check just now still 100%, with flash attached all along. Will update tomorrow.

from my experience, sony battery sucks. had WAY too many encounters with it. could be battery

unlucky you. i have been thru alot of sony cam.. most last me quite long. longest working is DSC-T1 still working over 100 shots

I am having the same issue. I charged the battery overnight when I bought it (probably 10hrs). I used the camera the following night to test.. Turned it off with the battery at 97%. when I turn on in the morning, its only at 37%. I have never attached the flash.

Was it a faulty battery or something that can be fixed by the coming software update?

:think:May be I'm very lucky, so far non of the Sony battery i use got this problems. Own many Sony camera with at least 9 pieces of the battery non had given any problems, except when in cold weather the battery will drain very fast, i think that is more than normal.

Is that your first Charge??

This morning was 100% freshly charged, check just now still 100%, with flash attached all along. Will update tomorrow.

Checked again just now, still at 100%. Almost 2 days, camera off with the flash attached.. It seems like need a few cycles of recharge to reach the battery potential.

I did a test by not placing the full charged battery in the camera.
day 1 - 100%
day 2 - 100%
day 3 - to be updated.

The fault probably lies in the nex5 body i think.

For those who replied do indicate if you have NEX5.
It will let us understand if the majority of the nex5 have this problem.

for those who just got their nex5....
Do a test.Charge the battery till full.
use it till it's maybe 98%.

Check battery level before you turn it off. make sure the camera is turned to OFF.
do not use the camera.
check day 2 and
day 3 and day 4.

Erm, you buy nex5 just to leave it there and watch the battery drain? Quite an expensive and time consuming hobby.

Well, just back from overseas using just the Nex5 Kit. Like Singapore, overseas also do no sell lenses by itself yet. Only kit sets but in Switzerland, they are selling the nex3 kit already.
Took over 1800 photos in 2 weeks. Due to several whole-day outings, I depleted the battery several times and recharged it every night. Number of photos per full charge is around 350-400 as advertised. It was inconvenient when I ran out of juice. My ex-Pentax Kx on AA Lithium batteries could give me 1600 shots while my current K7 can manage over 1000 shots before depletion, so the Sony battery with 350 shots is not sufficient for holiday use.
But Panorama mode and HD recording is great! Only problem is i forgot to switch it to HD mp4 mode and use full HD resulting it can't be viewed on my notebook using default media player.
The pictures look great on my notebook but when I transferred it to my desktop at 19" screen, I noticed the picture quality is not that great compared with my DSLR. So the reviews that the kit lens is so-so is true. Now waiting to get the 16mm pancake. :)

nex5 is simply a point & shoot cam for my wife.
=D

Another update. 5 days and charge is still holding at 100%.
Conclusion:
Leaving the flash attached does not drain the battery.
Need a few cycle of recharge to max battery potential.

anyone went to the sony centre and complain about the battery life? Mine seriously got problem, yesterday was at 100%, today switched on with only 11%. Is it really some problem with the battery or camera, i did not attach the flash, and am sure my cam is switched off. Am really disappointed with Sony products now....

How long have you own the cam and how many times have you charged the battery? IIRC, it has to run through a few charges before it will stablise.

Can you borrow someone's battery and try it on your camera to confirm if it's a battery problem.

You can also try your fully charged battery on someone's camera.

i bought my cam ever since it was launched at the IT show, have being using it on and off, have charged the battery for more than 10 times lioaz! just really thought as per se in this forum that its the charging thing, but sersiouly its not ah, if not mine should have already stabilized. aniway, just called SONY just now, they just ask me to bring cam down, but im thinking, they will have ways to know my cam problem meh? i google online to search if other country pple are encountering the same problem, apparently no much results ...
