I think you can try adding full set of kenko extension tubes to a short macro lens..like the Nikon 60mm or Tamron 60mm...not entirely sure but might get you to 3:1. You wont' get a lot of working distance though but it's not like you can get a lot of WD with the MPE.

WDs for the MPE: 1:1, 2:1.......5:1 = 4", 2.5", 2", 1.7", 1.6"

Oh i see...then a true macro lens first...the MPE is not recommended if you have no prior experience handling bigger than life size magnification.
