Hi all......

I am a newbie to the wonderful world of photography. Been playing around with a FM 10 for a while and have decided to pursue photography on a more serious level and hence, has decided to buy higher end equipment.

I can't decide between getting a brand new Nikon F80 or a second hand Nikon F90x. Budget is around $1000. Anyone would like to give their comments abt these two cams? Thanks!

Both camera is not bad..

But is $1000 all you are willing to pay or this is the budget for the camera body only?

You need to include extra cost like tripod, lens, flashes, camera bag, filter, dry box etc...

It may over shoot your budget rather quickly...

If you are talking abt 2nd hand.. it should be just enuff.

Do invest on a tripod(night shot),a dry cabinet and a camera bag(with rooms to expand)

You may exceed it by a bit.

look at 24/10 papers. f80 with af28~200 d lens at $1488. free sb22s, tripod, travel bag, camera bag, vest ....

Went CP today. Was quoted $650 for basic F80 and $1450 for the promo package. Is $650 considered cheap? Me intending to get a SLR early next year.

My budget ard $600 for a basic body. No brand preference btw Nikon or Canon. Still looking around. As for lens, will have to look for a usable cheap lens first. No money cos still jobless

If you are really interested in photography, invest in good lens. I think the package that comes together with F80 are plastics lens. Camera body is secondary.

Personally, I still prefer the old nikon manual lens as they are more faithful to the original colour than the newer AF lens.

Getting a good camera body is not as important as getting a good lens. If I were you, I will invest in a second hand F90x or F801, they cost about $400 to $500, I think. If you don't mind non-AF, personally, a second hand FM2/FE2 is a damn good buy now. Someone selling in yahoo for about $400.

Alternatively, second hand F3 cost about $600+ without winder... which is one of the best camera bodies nikon has ever made...

As for lens, try and get a manual focus lens, optics is better. In you looking for AF, I personally prefer one of those older nikkor AF lens. Second hand AF 28-50mm, I think, cost around $400-$500 at Adelphi & The Camera Workshop.

One piece of advise... you will enjoy photography more when you take control of your camera.

I recently took my dad's 20+ year old nikonmat out and serviced, took a few rolls in Tibet... I was amazed on the accuracy of the metering, ALL 36 exposures on every roll turned out perfect!

That is why I still prefer manual cameras.

1. Nikon F80D (new) or F90x + acc (2nd hand) = S$650
2. Nikkor AFD 50mm f1.8 = S$165
3. Manfrotto 190PRO B = S$150
4. Manfrotto 308RC head = S$85

Total = S$1050

Erm...how come you dug up a thread that is over a year old?

cOwz ... i tot i can sell the guy, who was starting photograhy, with my 28-200mm lens ... then realised tat this thread was so long ago ... ~~~
