F31fd vs F40fd

So the last question is, does the auto mode of the F40fd work better than the auto mode of the F31fd? I'm not particularly skilled with cameras, and would really like to point and shoot. Choosing a scene mode to improve the shot is fine, but I'd rather not be messing with the aperture or focal length or adjusting the exposure, if I can avoid it. I'd heard that the F30 had a tendency to overexpose in bright light. Did the F31fd fix this? Or the F40fd?

eh I think its the other way round... my F31fd seems to underexpose more... (most camera do that as well)
as for auto mode, most probably they behave the same, if you don need the more stylish design of f40 and face-detection, most probably you can save some bucks by getting the 6MP f20.

I would prefer F31fd, than F40fd. but have concern on type of memory used. Is there any XD to SD converter available in the market ? :dunno:

Shouldnt it be a SD-to-xD converter? so that you could use SD cards for the f31fd?

if you can do without fd(dont see why you cannot) and A/S modes(you already said your dislike of tinkering), yes get F20, a very capable pns and good value too.:)

Take a look of what how others use their F20 for:

you wish... ;) SD card is bigger than XD.. no way you can squeeze a bigger card into a smaller hole and that is neglecting the size of the converter as well. :bsmilie:

hahaha.... but i was wondering why yippy wanted a xd-to-sd converter. at the price of xd cards is nowadays, one would rather just buy a sd card direct.

I guess he wants a converter because xd's future doesn't look so bright. alot of cameras are using SD card anyway. That's actually one of the reason I hesitated on getting F31fd.

seriously at the rate memory card price is falling, I don really see any reason to bother that much...
PS: I just survived a trip with f31 and just 1GB card and my digimate III.

I just got the F40 and I think it underexposes more than the F31!

At the bottom of this review page there are some F40fd studio ISO samples with a bunny and colour chart

which you can compare with the similar F31fd studio samples of the bunny and colour chart

eh, I think the bunny shot for f40 is -0.67ev while f31 is only -0.33ev... otherwise they are the same

corrent me if im wrong.. :dunno:

Waa..heng ar , no need to upgrade...:bsmilie:

f31fd3_02.jpg

shutter 1/4 sec, f5.0

f40fd_iss2.jpg

shutter 1/20 sec, f5.1

if we take f5 to be the virtually the same as f5.1 then 1/4, 1/8, 1/16 stop increments to 1/20 shows that the F40 has underexposed by 2 stops! - and it shows in the pictures.

The exposure system on the F40 is a bit crazy. Normally if a metering system is subjected to a predominately black background, the automated exposure will overexpose and create a 18% mid grey, so it's very weird why it still has under exposed.

if you did extract the exif, the comparison ain't fair, the F31 is using pattern metering while the F40 is actually using spot(I dono where he meter, if its the bear, it probably have got a correct exposure)

Does the face detection really work?
