f2.8 Telephoto Lenses

I own the 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG APO Macro HSM II (I paid $1600 for a new set. T_T) and like you, also use a 5DM2. It's a nice combi.
The sigma is pretty decent. I got a good copy so it's pretty sharp. Focusing is quiet but will have some problems when it's dark. Has a slight orangy tint to it.

As for IS, it is not a must but situations do change and when i dont have a pod, that's when i REALLY wish i had IS.
If you want budget, the new sigma 70-200 has OS on it.

Bottom line, you have to ask youself these questions:
How much am I willing to fork out?
Am i willing to sacrifice quality over price? and vice versa.

As for me, I'd save up and get the Canon with IS.
My reason; I get quality glass and peace of mind.

i'm currently using the EF-70-200 f2.8..

first to say.. the weight sometimes bother me.

and the lack of IS sometime leaves me wondering if i had shud have bitten the bullet and gotten the IS version..

but i think can work around lah. i got the telephoto mainly cuz of the same reasons as yours. DoF control and price.. just increase your shutter speed(boost ISO, underexposed by 1/3 or 2/3 of a stop..) and you should be fine..

otherwise, if you really shoot in really light-deficient places, go with a monopod or tripod. I've covered a dinner event with with with my 40D boosted to ISO 1000, no flash. some blurry shots but most of it were keepers. work on your technique(breathing, handholding and stuff like that) and you should be on your way.

Is there really a big difference with the IS version? Would you see the difference at sunny day shoot? Can you compensate it with other camera settings?:think:

Why not hop over to a shop and try both versions? Or just switch off IS on the IS version. Observe the difference in the jittery AF points, and conclude for yourself how steady you can hand-hold a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens.

From my own usage, i can tell you switching off IS means it vibrates like an earthquake. With IS on, the sway is very smooth and easier to control.
