F100 + what lens?

What do you plan to shoot using your 28-200 zoom? Or rather, what is the main thing that you normally shoot?

I understand your budget is going to be very tight.... so even though I wouldn't recommend one, it may have to do if you absolutely need the focal range all in one lens.

It will do well for outdoor/bright light situations. F100+28-200 lens will track better than your 602, but if u ever need to shoot in low light, like concerts, events(the usual fashion shows), you will wish for a faster lens.

Portraiture.... hmmm.... can do, but can be very limited in some aspects.

The Nikon version (the newer G one, not the D) did receive good reviews compared to other similar lenses. How good depends on your needs though.

I've tried the Tamron 28-200 & 300 before. Nice, lightweight lenses, but gives you soft images wide open, with noticeable distortion. Still alright for most cases, but need to stop down.

Problem with such lenses is when using the 200mm or 300mm end, the aperture becomes so small that your shutter speed becomes so slow. Normally, the F5.6 of the 28-200 is reached when u zoom out to around 150mm. The aperture size ramps down very quickly if you were to take note of this while u rotate the zoom ring. Couple exaggerated telephoto hand-shake with this and u get blur images. The 602 does not experience this as much as the aperture range is fairly small compared to a 28-200. If you get slow shutter speeds at the wide angle, chances are, it won't be a whole lot worse when u zoom in.

Another thing to note is u gotta to get to know film... ;)

erm abit out of modenaslim's budget right...

50/1.8, best general purpose lens for the money.

alternatively, the pricier 35/2 but it is getting rarer by the day.

my personal fave is 55/2.8 but i seldom use it on my f100 as it is rather difficult to manually focus on the f100, though not impossible.

i avoid zooms with >3 times zoom power as the picture quality is...

my 70-300's quality betrayed the ED emblem it had on the barrel. so much for ED quality.

my suggestion: beg, borrow or buy (just don't steal) any lenses you fancy, put them on the f100 and shoot. compare results and then decide for yourself which lens(es) suit(s) your styles.

cheers,

yes.. so far what i had in mind are

50mm f1.8 >> becoz it's sharp and most importantly cheap..

AFS24-85mm f3.5 - 4.5 >> becoz recommended by few Nikon Users and as well as affordable...

2nd hand value in clubsnap is about S$380-S$400++ Me still can afford.. :D :D

one last question.. does SB-25 works well with F100?? i-TTL compatible?
had tried D100+SB-25, only worked in auto mode..

i-TTL is only for digital cameras as the sensor in the speedlight can't gauge the intensity of the flash needed directly from the film plane. For Nikon film cameras, most advanced is still basic TTL :D Since the F100 is a film camera, it would have full compatibility with the SB-25, unlike your friend's D100 which is a digital camera.

work within ya budget....loads of lenses out there...but i would recommend nikkor and tamron only...personal preference..

never handled a F100 b4..so why is it difficult to manually focus on the F100?
just curious.

Nikon MF cameras usually have those split screens with microprisms. It's VERY obvious when you have achieved focus; the sharp image leaps out at you, whereas for the F100, the normal B screen E screen doesn't have this..instead, you have to rely on your eyes and the electronic rangefinder, which is not as shiok. Though I've heard about third party Beattie screens which you can buy to replace the original screens for easier manual focus.
