How far back are you sitting?

Don't need a 200mm if you are sitting on near the track.

Hope you're not sitting too far up, 'cos the 70-200 on FX may be just a little too short. TC-14/TC-17 Teleconverter maybe? I envy the high shutter speeds you will be able to achieve by bumping up the ISO though, brings the cars to a halt no matter how fast they are.

For TS on his D90 the 70-200 should be a great fit.
two things, D700 + 70-200 VR.

thats all i'm bringing...

Really depends on the type of shots. I had the 200 with me last year and it wasnt long enough... =)

i'll be at the pitwall, so i don't need ultra long ones.

mine's not a seat, but it's a pitwall pass.

it's is a personal invite.

though for friday i have a seat in the green room, but for saturday and sunday i can only walkaround everywhere and hang in the pitwall but can't seat anywhere.

Looks like you need UWA or FE. ;p

i think the 70-200 will provide the extra reach but i am using a crop body, so it should be ok!

bringing only that lens, anything else will be using my PNS.

i think TS will want the f/2.8 so it defeats the purpose if you're using a TC.

I seriously think you should bring a wide angle. You can get access up close to the cars, don't waste the opportunity to go up close for a shot. These will be the shots that others can never hope to get unless they have your kind of access. Wide angle would give the mood of the background. I'd bring along 12-24 and 17-55 for the wider angle shots in addition to the 70-200.

 See the green on my face?

Oh thought you mentioned you are bringing a D700, so a TC-14 would have been a good option for you since it saps zero stops of light, preserves the speed of the F2.8, and adds reach.

TS, you can consider if you are sitting high above the stands.

Distorted F1 cars! Bring the UWA, it is just 1 more lens and 70mm on DX may just be slightly too long to get everything in.

Any TC would add a multiplying factor to the f-number as well. So a TC-14 (1.4x?) would reduce the aperture by a stop. A 2x TC would reduce by 2 stops.

not to mention the quality also drops.
I wouldnt use TC unless absolutely neccessary.

pitwall... hmm.. we all will be looking forward to u posting ur closeup pics after sunday then.

That's a season pass, with flight and accommodation included. And paddock access too.

Apart from the $$, you need to have time to fly on every race weekend.

Yup! especially to those who flew from other country to watch and shoot the race? :D

get a 2.8 lens at least. 200mm min, which is already insufficient

It really depends on where you're at.
Last year I was at the Bay Grandstand, and I shot the cars between turn 16 (along Raffles Avenue) and turn 17, and 200mm was more than enough.
Of course I must also mention that I'm using a D40, so the 1.5x crop factor did add some reach.
I managed this panning shot at 1/160s, 116mm, f/4.8 and ISO 400. I was using a 55-200mm f/4-5.6 VR.

This year I'll probably bring my 17-50mm f/2.8, 100mm f/2.8 Series E and the 55-200mm f/4-5.6 VR.
I wanted to rent a 70-200mm f/2.8 VR, but I bet it's already a bit too late.

200mm surely not enough. i was at turn 2 last year. already a good vantage point and 300mm is just enough for the panning shots. if shooting down along the driveway, starting block, 500mm or 600mm more like it.

however if using a walkabout pass, standing at the edge, close to the fence, 200mm might be sufficient. but then the angles available would be quite limited. will get bored after a while.
