I am trying to see which brand is most used by Clubsnap members.

More users mean the brand is trusted by more people.

This maybe due to advices from other people or personal experiences.

I am planning to get a HD soon, Seagate never failed on me (my oldest drive was bought 1994) and I have had bad experiences with Maxtor and WD. But seeing that majority of members uses WD, maybe its worth to try again.

I see. Normally I would go against the norm, which works well but paying a premium.

I think for Hitachi/IBM, there is only the DeathStar 75GXP or something that is problematic so far.

FYI I just bought 2x 1TB Hitachi 32MB cache for RAID 1, made in china.

Western Digitals are made in Thailand and Malaysia, depending on the batches and models.

Lets hope Hitachi/IBM's legacy continues on for me like Seagate for you.

Regards

I hope so too.

In 1996, WD has been a real nightmare for me, 3 HDs in 1 year!

That's why I'm so surprised to see a lot of people using it now.

Thinking of getting a Western Digital MyBook Studio Edition II (2x hard-disk inside), to configure as Raid 1 (mirror) for redundancy. Anyone used this product with MacBook and can comment whether FW800 and eSata has big difference in speed? If yes, then perhaps I should invest in a eSata card for my MacBook Pro.

Harddisk failure depends on luck usually, unless it's a bad batch. Maxtor is the worst years back, I bought a few for my friends and relatives, only a few survive, the rest RMA after few months, some even sent a few times.

Till date, I've RMA IBM (Hitachi now), Seagate, WD, Fujitsu and Samsung harddisks. So if I were to base on personal experiences on the various brands, what else can I buy? I also have some hitachi, seagate and WD working for years without fail.

My point is, it depends how lucky you are. Harddisk can fail any moment regardless of brand, just make more than one backup to your valuable data and photos.

For critical stuffs, can consider putting in a thumbdrive, failure rates are much lower than any harddisk since no moving parts. So far, I've no encounter of thumbdrive or memory card that fails. For harddisk, lost count already.

for me WD is the choose...
RMA once... within 4 day deliver back to my door...
i have try many WD drive, so far none fail me yet...
i RMA that one is because i go unplug the harddisk powercable when it is powered up...

Samsung and maxtor is NO NO for me...
Samsung RMA a few time... it take ages to get the stock...
Maxtor for me just throw... it will not last even with the new RMA drive... don't risk yur data...

Samsung I went straight to their service center in SLS, 1-1 exchange and all done within 5 min. Better than WD still need to go post office buy a package to put into and buy stamp to send or register article. So I don't based on just 1 experience to avoid or buy certain brand, if so for my case, I'll buy all Samsung already.

Unlike Maxtor which is a confirmed gone case product.

I use 1 piece of WD 320GB 2.5" and 2 pieces of Hitachi 320GB 2.5". So far so good. Touch wood.

CHeck out this article in Tom's Hardware which compared USB2.0, FW and eSATA.

eSATA won... :)

i'm not using any external hdd casing from the hdd manufacturers. But i am using 2 of this 4 bay hdd enclosure which is very good value for money because it allows you to insert 4 hdds of any brand and has both USB and eSATA interface.

Specs here

so even if you only have 1 or 2 hdd now, u can add more later on.

anyway, i'm using Hitachi and WD drives for my external hdd enclosures.

Currently using WD My Passport Essentials 500GB & WD Elements SE 1TB :D

According to the guy who has repaired my computer, Western Digital is a 'avoid-at-all-cost' brand, is that true? However, the poll seems to suggest otherwise.

He recommended me to get a Seagate instead.

Seagate is best!!!.

I have missed part of data because of WD external drive, But i have managed to recover data by recovery software.

On what basis? The guy who repaired your computer may had bad experience with WD. But it doesn't stand for the majority users experience. I've been fine with Quantum, Maxtor (those were years ago). And now... I got 2 Hitachi desktop drives purchased in 2003-2004. One 80Gb SATA as current OS drive for desktop. The other 120Gb in my Xtremezoom external case for backup.

Added WD 640Gb added as my desktop storage drive in 2008.
Last year I got a Hitachi 500Gb Simpledrive Mini for backup.

So base on my own experience, I will still get Hitachi and WD.

2nd to that.
such are still bases on individual experience. some may have bad experience with WD or seagate??
however, my desktop hdd is hitachi and has been servicing me for the past 3 years.
i do have 2 WD ext hdd which are still going good.

Drawn to using Lacie due to their association with good design.

G-Technology 2.5" G-drive mini : x 2

The 1st one is a USB 2.0 and has been in service since 2005. I use it occasionally. New one is a FW800 & USB 2.0 model. Very fast and quiet.

Samsung S2: x 3

These pretty drives are reliable. Just be careful to eject them before pulling out the USB cable.

I'll avoid Seagate.

Bought SGT & maxtor drives both got problem and need to send for replacement.

Now the SGT seems ok but the replacement maxtor drive seems to have problem again..

Frequently encounter "Unable to write to $Mft etc.... " error..

seagate hdd seemed to get heated up easily and would get kinda noisy after that. hmmm... its not only me but by other users as well.
