Dear All...

I was looking for a solution for these matter..
actually i dont quite unsderstand why need to break telecon (don? why?)
compared to buying Extension tubes...(dca?)

i dont quite understand also which to buy... what kind of telecon to buy what kind of ext tube to buy?

need advise.. he..he..

Thank you...

Hi muko,

I break it because I got it cheap, only $40 for a 2nd hand (Tamron 2X TC). its almost equivalent to a 25mm ext tube. Cost saving is the keyword here when I was searching for an ext tube.

Note: You'll need electrical contacts on the ext tube, so that the aperture blades can close when you shoot since Minolta lenses has no aperture ring. unless you consider getting MD lens, MD ext tube but you'll need to find an adapter.

Don.

err, i'd say, buy a macro lens, its easier to use for beginners, after appreciating a macro lens, then you get a extension tube.

i am now using extension tube with 300mm due to some 'restriction' in shooting... to get a 1:1, i think i need at least 150mm extension... hehehe.... :sweatsm:

Hi Muko,

Personally, I have taken a used 2x teleconvertor (thickness around 25mm) which cost about $50 used and removed the glass(optics) in it to transform it into a telconvertor.

I chose this route because its cheaper than having to buy a set of dedicated extension tubes (of three pieces - to give you different magnifications) - this extension tube set cost around $99~$120.

I chose the teleconvertor route as the teleconvertor that i used (a kenko 2x teleplus) do have a multiplier internally to show the true stops reduction value on my camera body.
Unlike an extension tube, which normally do not have such circuit internally.

So About breaking the glass......errrr.....i think its not that advisable as you may end up damaging other parts of the lens if not careful.

If you do need help in removing the glass if you happen to choose the TC route.....let me know. I may lend a hand to remove the optics for you.....

I have owned the 100mm Macro lens form KM before but sold it off due to its limited use. So selling the lens got me a wide angle zoom and a 2nd hand TC(for the operation). The tube when used carefully with lens like the 28-75(d), 35-70f4 for example, gives consistent great output........provided you use it with sufficient lighting( e.g flash) - as to obtain a good DOF - you may need to stop down to about f8~f16 (resulting in f16~f32 displayed on camera).

just like me, i broke the chip (mini circuit board when i dismantle the TC). :(
but doesn't matter on the metering as i'm going full manual.

O ho ho ho...

But guys..
if the TC is only 25mm then actually can buy an extension with that same length right?
No need to buy the whole set.
If buy only one maybe not so expensive.

If have this reason hmmm.. maybe it is very worth it..
But if don't have such circuit what does it means? your aperture cannot set or only display wrongly?

Hmmmm.... thank you...

I've mentioned in my post earlier. no circuit electrical contacts = no aperture settings = f/32 or f/22 all the way depends on lens max aperture. you can't even focus at all as its way too dark (aperture did not open up).

ha..ha.. after the gathering now i know what you mean...

how to count this 1:X or any macro ratio by the way?

ahhh.... totally cannot do kah?
then why do people create such extension tubes?

when we buy can we check by using the DOF prev button... to see that the aperture can move or not... is it like that?

you mean yours or extension tubes in general?

cos mine, MF or AF version, all can set aperture leh, u see that springy thing is the aperture control, if not i die in studio environment liao...

dunno if i am wrong here or not, using a extension tube will not decrease your aperture, the reason is there isn't any glass in between, so when you use a 50mm 1.7, with a 25mm extension to get a 1:1, u get a 50mm 1.7 macro 1:1, you just lose the infinity focus only... to go 2:1, just add another 25mm, microscope liao... wan 3:1, add another 25mm... but it would be so near that even antz would crawl up to the lens and no flash can reach...

ops, you're right. the control aperture one is the aperture lever. the contacts is to let the camera knows there's a lens attach.

Actually, it will lost abt 1 stop of light using extension tube (erh.. my only one is 25mm)..

So for a true macro 1:1 lens plus a 25mm will get 2:1, correct?

All these ratios are based on a 50mm lens and a 25mm extension tube right?

Hi there. I think that at 1:1 mag, no matter what your focal length, u lose two stops compared to infinity, but your geometric aperture stays the same, so your DoF characteristics remain the same.

English? LOL!

Here is formula to calculate magnification

magnification = extension / focal length

Say, you have 50mm extension and you use a 50mm lens, you will have 1:1 mag
or 100mm extension, and 50mm lens, you have 2:1 mag

I modify the old Minolta extension bellow to fit the AF body on it and use the manual MD lens in front so I can stop the aperture down manually.

Hart
