eh im the opposite.. i can live without bread but cannot without rice..
my parents say i am 饭桶 (rice container)
but i dont really eat a lot of rice la.. just that i must eat rice for meals most of the times (i dont like noodles haha)

yeah 24mm is tempting cus of the range, but 30mm is tempting cus of the aperture. 1.4!! but actually, is there really very great difference between 1.4 and 1.8? if not really, maybe i shld go for the 24mm..
24mm = must order from MS color and wait about 1 month ~_~
Or you can considered Sigma 20mmf1.8.
It will be 35mm for DX, good for general use.
and 20mm for FX, good for street.
Before the price increase a month ago is around S$700 plus.

sheree, for most street photographers, they prefer 40mm perspective
before crop factor, that is 28mm or 27mm
no prime lenses made for 27mm, you should try a 28mm. if you want a manual nikon 28mm, ebay uk is chockful of them, i can buy one back for you.

If i may interject, the 24L prime is a great lens to use for streets (even on crop frame). You wont regret owning one though it can cost alot for what its worth.
The 1.4 has nice colors and the distortion is quite well controlled. It gives pleasing results even at f1.4. But being wide angle, focussing can get a little tricky at times. As for 1.8, i believe its value for money, but i was told it needs to be stopped down a little more for better sharpness.
just my humble thoughts....

i don't know, my approach to street tends to be to shoot at f/8, with manual prefocus..
i mean, it's certainly challenging to even shoot people at f/1.8 or shallow dof, with the benefit of greater isolation, but to really "arrange" the street into some semblance of a composition, be it with light, or moment, or anything, even color.. somehow shallow dof seems like a wee bit of cheating to me..
in which case.. any lens would really do, so long as the performance is up to par at f/8.. which is generally no problem for most.
granted, most of the street photographers in the past that are popularised today were generally shooting with such a style because they had no other choice.. but if they could produce timeless results..?
you can also end up concentrating on netting the moment as well, instead of capturing expressions. maybe it's just me, i tend to have very.. rigid approaches to certain genres of photography.

Well said and i had came across stock photographers roaming on singapore streets and when they bump into me, they asked me for permission to shoot some of the antiques i have. When i asked them about their belief, the usual phrase, "F8 and be there."
i happen to have the 24 and love it for low light or indoor shoots. To me, F8 is a luxury to have if light and timing permits. Tripod kicks in next (or to some, they dial up the iso). But if i saw a beautiful subject under shade and i have 3 to 4 seconds to react, My only 2 dials to run my fingers would be aperture and/or shutter. For eg, human subjects. To ask him/her to smile again would look too fake. But to capture the essence within a snap can be priceless.
