researching on off camera flash and wireless triggers nao...
thinking of getting a cheap trigger to play around first as I don't have much money.

On canon or their related flashes, you have a few choices. The more reliable but expensive would be the radio poppers, pocket wizards, skyports and cactus.

Then next up would be the IR ones. They may be a lil iffy at times though.

Nikon has the AWL but I've not tested it in bright light yet.

Canon also has the wireless option but must purchase another piece of equipment IIRC.

I emailed the guy with questions about compatibility with the Metz Hammerflash but he said he wasn't sure if its really compatible but said that i was free to exchange the unit for something else if it's not compatible... which i feel is abit troublesome

This I'm not sure either. But if you like, you can inquire with Skyestang or DM. Both of them uses Metz flashes and may advise you on which wireless system is suitable.
