hey guys, need a tip.

when buying second hand cameras, what do you consider as low shutter count? as in, is there like below a certain range that makes it 'safer' to purchase, especially for cases when there's no more warranty or anything?

I think shutter count is a very fickle thing.... Some people shutter die at very low numbers, some go way beyond the rated shutter count x2, x3 also can...

What you do need to look out for in second hand camera is simply that the shutter count is taken into account. For example, if all the D90s relatively brand new second hand (meaning 1K shutter count and below, very low shutter count) are going for say, $900 (for the sake of discussion, I dunno the price) and some joker is selling a 40K actuation D90 copy for $900, you should not bother with the deal, or try to haggle the price down lower. Can point out to him very nicely and think of a reasonable price to offer - I would say, discount this by $150, or base it on the replacement cost of a shutter since the 40K actuation copy is definitely A LOT more likely to require this than the 1K copy.

Don't forget that you still can replace the shutter after all.

Hope this helps.

So far I've not encountered or heard any of my friend's dslr shutter died (I had my old nikon FE shutter dead though)... So for me personally, I take the shutter count as a gauge of the amount of usage by the user rather then the worry of the shutter dying... I think most of the time other electronics start to fail before the shutter.
