To many who are faced with the best sunset they have seen in their life, they would rather be caught with the most gorgeous girl in their arms rather than a DSLR. :bsmilie:

:bsmilie:

i won mind having both :bsmilie:

If you try hugging a gorgeous girl while shooting the sunset, you will just end up knocking your camera and girl over. :bsmilie:

When the day comes, you have to consult master NNB for advice. :bsmilie:

He will recommend this. Made by the same wooden tripods company:

The writer also a bit hard sell sia..

He cannot carry his DSLR and shoot without a tripod??? Ok la, if he got MF then fair enough.... DSLR rocks! :bsmilie:

Of course P&S has its uses, but primary tool is still going to be DSLR, until P&S can be more versatile and do things like long exposure, mount filters easily, or even simple stuff like offer a 15mm perspective... Not to say that it cannot be used, just that if I were faced with the best sunset I had seen in my life, I'd rather be caught with a DSLR than any modern P&S.

i think you are missing his main point...
"If you want to travel light and still take great images then small format might just be the thing you are looking for."

There's no doubt that DSLR offers much greater versatility in focal lengths/lenses/long exposures, but to me the main thrust of his article is to debunk the notion that good landscape photos can ONLY be taken by full frame DSLRs.

He still shoots with DSLR and LF, but uses an LX3 as a backup and sometimes as a "travel light" hiking/biking camera.

The P&S has its limitations, but is also not entirely without merit. :)

Trust me, the people who know that already know that... And the people who don't, well, they hug their FF DSLR to sleep...

Just highlighting that the examples he shared slant towards no-water side... Find me a person who uses a P&S to take good seascape photographs exclusively and constantly.... Then I'll eat my hat. The compact suits his needs, but frankly the article doesn't tell me anything that I don't already know (good light = P&S can do; P&S very light and compact, nothing new; P&S good for his scouting purposes... Okayyy) - and it's by no means balanced, since it doesn't point out the demerits of P&S landscape photography.

Sure, you can travel and take great images with a small format - but only given very specific conditions - which he didn't bother to highlight. It's like the girl who silenced the world for 5 minutes telling us things we already knew - the cynic in me says that it's more to do with highlighting that "Hey, I'm doing it, so wow, look at me". But that's my view, you don't have to follow it. Of course you could view it as a wonderful expose that demonstrates the capabilities of P&S for landscapes.. Can also extend it to any genre... Macro, portrait, etc..

Don't even talk about compact, iPhone or lesser phone cameras can do a good job given the right conditions. And for these you can't even control the settings.
