We came pretty close a couple of years ago when a Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) from Magnetar SGR 1806-20 (a neutron star), barely missed us in astronomical terms threatening to strip away our ozone layer on the 27th of December 2004. A direct hit would have meant complete annihilation, a mass extinction event of almost every single species including microorganisms here and the destruction of Earth herself.

Near-Earth Asteroid (NEA) 99942 Apophis also discovered in 2004 has a potential to impact us on the 13th of April 2036.

Good news is that we are nowhere near where it may struck, but it may not really matter when close to a gigaton of TNT worth of explosive energy is release. Estimated casualties could be in the tens of millions.
