Besides fishing vessels bringing in the fishes, lorries from Malaysia? drop by with their cargo too.
I guess our demand for fishes exceeds what the boats can bring in.

Hi, Im Mambo and I am pretty new with photography. Street photography is what really interests me because of the fleeting images right in front of you. Catch it before its gone!

Story of how I got this picture (below)i
I was taking portrait photos of my girlfriend under the bridge near the Esplanade Theatres. Then when I looked at my left and saw this man sleeping beside a bike, which I think he owns as well. I silently approached him, aimed, focused and took the shot.

The picture is open for any interpretation, but to me, it portrays loneliness, exhaustion and solitary. Yeah, Im that bad in telling stories. Haha!

I like taking pictures of anything interesting. Sometimes i have trouble interpreting a photograph whenever a caption is missing. I am also curious about the story behind the image. Knowing the story , how the image was set up and the various process helps me enjoy the image a bit more. Hence the title "every picture tells a story" and not " a picture is worth a thousand words".
We all have our favorite images from our own collection and many of them are quite personal (apart from the techincal aspect of composition, colour management which have a certain acceptable standards) but they all have a story to tell.
I am a newbie at this forum, sometimes i have an image which i like to post. But i am not sure where to post, apart from starting a thread and maintaining it. It can be a bit difficult especially if there are many other commitments. Some threads are exclusive to brands or style, while you can listen in you can't quite participate or feel it is not right to "butt in" .(even for someone with thick skin like me) Of course we can put it up at the C&C corner and be publicly flogged (which is of course good for the soul . It definitely puts you on your toes and possibly help set a higher standard for yourself) but then sometimes we just want to put up our images without C&C, for better or for worse. I hope that this thread will encourage any one who may have a few "picture with a story to tell" but not sure where to post to come forward.

I am just a hobbyist trying to have a bit more fun and hopefully posting some images on line will help me improve.

Some ground rules:
Image should have a story to tell, how long a story is up to you. But variety is the key.

Include your own copyright , releases, whatever if you are posting.

Every post should include an image eg. if i want to encourage the person and said nice picture , i would at the same time include a story of my own. But feel free to post an image even if you have no comment. I and i am sure many others would like to hear your story. So i'll start off with a nice picture and capitalise on her famous smile.

Poor Mona Lisa, seems like someone or something has snatched the attention from her. There was actually a queue snaking around to admire her, these people were in the queue to see her. I simply shot this from another angle to make it seem like Mona Lisa has been snubbed.

Hi mambo ferido,
Thanks for sharing your self portrait.
Must be a rough day at the office.
Without your story that's how i see it.

Since you do not have a thread where you post your images, you are most welcome to share your images on this thread which i started, however one of the ground rules is that you must have a story to tell. Please refer to the above from page one of this thread. Of course i also understand that some images are self explanatory.

I know it is tough starting and maintaining a thread.:bsmilie:

Best regards,
Teng Kiat

It would be nice to start off introducing yourself eg.

Hi, I am Teng kiat and i have a story to share.

Hi aimANDshoot, i am sure by now you realise it is the jurong fishery port.

Thank you very much. I look forward to your stories.

Hi Teng Kiat!

First, I apologize for missing out the stories behind my photo. I have edited my post though.
Second, thank you for welcoming my photos to be shared on your thread. I appreciate it so much. Hope I can also shoot with you and meet new friends!

An unexpected game of hide and seek.

I was engrossed in taking in the images of the exhibition when i noticed some movement at the exit. I caught sight of a little girl peering through the curtain.

A curious kid i said to myself. So i waited and hope for her to re emerge again.
I waited, i hear her voice just outside the curtain, she was waiting for her father. I wasn't sure how long i had to wait so i made some strange noises, stomp my foot a bit and hoping that she may think it is her father coming. It got her attention! And i have my images.

It is always good to be out in the shoes of a photographer.
One tends to be a little more sensitive to activities around us.

All in it was a well spent and fruitful Sunday.

Besides the Flux Realities exhibition at the Art Science Museum($5 entry),i also caught the SIPF exhibition at the National Museum (free) and attended a talk on Chinese contemporary photography by curator and writer Gu Zheng.

There is something else, as my alter ego, my ears are prick up too.
It was the sound of gong, specifically the sounds of malay gong that caught my attention as i was about to cross over from fort canning car park to the national museum.

That, is story for another day.

Hi aimANDshoot and mambo ferido, i am sure we will have a chance to go shoot together one of these days. In the meantime all of us here look forward to stories from you guys.

On a side note, these photos though taken today are dated 1/1/2012. No thanks to my sigma DP1M, but i love it!

With Deepavali round the corner, i decided that it is about time i drop by Little India (actually my first visit as a photographer, mostly it is for food).
So last night in the good company of Chee Wei we hit the night lights.

Festival of the light, no stories here, all i could think of is lights and colours!

Let there be light!

One of those happy moments where the subject simply appeared before you by chance, i was crossing the road and right before me was this scene. I brought my camera to my eye, shot and just walked on. It was the light around him that caught my attention. I did pp to reduce the surrounding exposure for a better feel.

I like this one of the old man. Nice isolation. Just enough fall away of the light towards the edge if the frame. Sweet. It's like he's under a spotlight!

I also noticed an increased presence of security efforts in this place, brighter lights for back lanes, cameras and mobilised personnels.

Other watchful eyes.

15511513121_a1864406a8_o.jpg

I noticed some changes.

Most noticeably absent is the mind numbing substance, alcohol. In its place an equally mind numbing presence ...TV.
That's the feeling i get when i saw this group engrossed in watching TV and reaching out to another altered reality.
Just like them, movies are a favourite altered reality of mine.
Look carefully and you will notice three of them wearing striped shirt to complement the metal shutter gate.

A can of coke just won't do.

Hi Darryl and Norman,
Thanks for the encouragement!
One of those lucky moments where the indoor lighting seems right and i happen to be there to notice it.
Those where you "happen to be there" shots usually turn out quite all right. It almost seem liked he posed. Lucky me!

A can of coke just won't do is my other favourite "happen to be there" shot of the night.
We were walking along the road and i just decided to walk back into the five foot way corridor.
And the moment i stepped in, i came across this very still scene of men mesmerised by TV.
Lucky me again when this chap walked back with his can of coke in this hand and stayed on to complete the scene in the background.

You guys should drop by in the evening too. It's lovely at night.

Chee Wei, thanks for the company for a wonderful night out! Of course not forgetting meeting a fellow hobbyist, Boris who works here and is from Serbia.

Thank you very much. I look forward to your stories.

Nice shots there, particularly of the old man in the shophouse. Wished I could have joined u guys too. :)

Some other random shots from the visit.

Bang bang.

After the first bang i waited for this shot. Just glad that the shop keeper allowed the kid to shoot off another round. During framing of the shot, the kid was actually looking into the muzzle at one point but only briefly but at that time i did not realise the danger it could posed (i was just thinking of waiting for the moment)

15529826501_feeb5012e8_o.jpg

Pull pull.

This kid ws trying to bring the house down. I wasn't going to stop him, i justed waited ...and hoped...

Paradox of choice.

Having more choices can be an obstacle for some people. There is a book titled "paradox of choice". It made a difference for me. Do read it.

Work or play.

Hak wee , glad you chose work over play that night. As a consolation, this picture is for you.

Work is fun. Waiting for work is tough.

I look forward to your stories. Thank you very much.

*work is fun but waiting for work is tough
Great catch! Nice way to exemplify your statement. Love the way the scene lined up for you. And the colour coordination as well! Cool

Hi Norman,

Thanks for dropping by. I try to fit the words to the images or vice versa.

Whenever i am out, for any event , every scene that i come across gets put into different sub folder, eg, the first part of little India is all about the fantasy world of colours and light. Second part is about people. And third part is just some social commentary. Nothing is fixed, one scene leads to another. But at the same time a story is forming in my head.I just keep my eye out for anything. Sometimes it could just be a central theme. But it is always flexible. However when i edit my picture story, i try to maintain a flow from one image to another. This is the fun part trying to gel the two together. You should give it a try.

The "work is fun..." was from the the bugis series defence against the street photographer.

Here's "On the lookout_a htc moment." But I try not to have a tunnel vision though.
