Every picture tells a story

Better late than never.

Here's wishing all a Happy, Prosperous and Healthy Lunar New Year.

No camera was harmed or damaged in the process.
Probably the lamest thing anyone can do with a gopro. :bsmilie:

Hi Hak Wee, love all your dramatic Thaipusam shots too! I forgot that i have a UWA in my hero 3.

Hey thanks Teng! Great to know u have an uwa in your arsenal now too. :)

Those with faith see the light.

Photographers follow the light.

12457476194_a75e791dc7_b.jpg

Or wait for the light.

12366348924_ef1cba6121_b.jpg

And definitely not keep clear of the light.

I got my FE mount 24-70, and had a taste of using it today. Contrary to what people say, the auto focus worked fine for me. Would not have come out to take these photos if not for Hak Wee.

I also tried out a night scene with it.

jpg, with a cooler WB, and selective saturation and desaturation of some colours.

I read a report by Nat Geo about life on earth began on land, not sea.

http://news.nationalgeographic.com/...fe-land-mud-darwin-evolution-animals-science/

So on a lighter note,
Did land creatures come from the sea?

Maybe, maybe not...

Evolution.

I look forward to your stories. Thank you very much.

As the festivities of the CNY start to wind down.

The vigor and vitality of the galloping Horse continue to lead us all into the Lunar New Year .
Let's do our best and with grace to surmount hurdles that may stand in our way as we race into the year.

Unstoppable

I wanted to shoot a picture of a galloping horse for the CNY.

Opportunity arose on Fri night at the galloping horse display along Eu Tong Sen St.
It was one of those times that the blown highlights in the background worked to my advantage.
I saturated the yellow, red and green for the gaudy CNY look.
FE 24-70mm, ISO 100. 1/20 f5.6

I look forward to your stories. Thank you very much.

Haha getting hardcore now yeah ;p

Chasing shadows.

Sometimes when following the light, i end up chasing shadows.

Hours in the sun and shadows start to play tricks on my mind.

Have you had any shady encounters?

Shadow play.

TIc tac toe.

12483026524_a391debb62_z.jpg

Most of the time it is pretty straight forward what we shoot.

I see.

12613648675_1bcee149c0_b.jpg

I shoot.

12613752633_c0457e248e_b.jpg

Of course there are times we see things differently, that's when it is usually more fun.

Slanted view.

12613764213_5c54d5da32_h.jpg

So, what do you see when you shoot?

Hi Chee Wei,

Not that hardcore. You won’t see me jumping out of a plane anytime soon or ever. I am a chicken when it comes to things like this. Cluck, cluck.

I look forward to your stories. Thank you very much.

Have you given your future some thoughts.

The recent government decision to reward the pioneer generation does bring to mind the importance of retirement planning.
Do you look forward to retirement, do you want retirement. Or can you afford retirement.

Watching the boats sail by. Some will of course be sailing the boat.

12794591655_0721130b88_b.jpg

Are you low or high maintenance, which can you afford? Does it matter as long as you are happy with your lot.

12795503094_bb22c37f3e_b.jpg

Most important, i guess is to stay positive and strive to be independent , health permitting.

12794592315_c720efbf38_b.jpg

I think most daunting will be financial health during retirement.

If you are looking at balancing your books at the end of each month then it is time to rethink some life style choices or do something else and hopefully change for the better. Easier said than done though. It's not that retirement is a long time away, rather life after retirement can be a very long time. If you don't have such concerns then good for you. In that case take good care of your health and hope that you have good genes to help you along.

Free as a bird.

12795319604_f26f343955_z.jpg

I look forward to your stories. Thank you very much.
Glad to see more people contributing to streets and candids.

Learning from each other is what photographers enjoy doing as well.

We have different preferences and styles.

Chee Wei will try to go as close as possible for his streets, Hak Wee as wide as possible to grab the whole landscape and i go looking for stories even when there are none.

Different strokes for different folks, but all end up with each fulfilling his own vision.

13185219963_6a6c631bf6_z.jpg

Some see near,

13185220253_8c8814d912_b.jpg

some see far.

Jump!

13185220893_63780a596a_b.jpg

Actually i wanted to capture the smiles on their faces when they jumped. And since i am no Flash,
i would have to depend on the resolving power of the 36MP sensor coupled with the FE 24-70mm.

13185220783_fac5bdd60c_b.jpg

And closer, i feel like jumping too.

13185391484_18c3d43b77_b.jpg

continue...

Sometimes we collaborate to get a shot.

I held my camera, using tethered view on my smartphone app Chee Wei clicked the shutter. Even camera apps are getting smarter and sneakier.:embrass:

All lined up.

13185220103_85fd23a0a4_z.jpg

Besides the world photopress exhibition at Raffles Hotel, we also went to this exhibtion at Sundaram Tagore Gallery by Edward Burtynsky at blk 5, Lock road inside Gillman Barracks. on your left after the parking gantry.

Any one interested in photography should not miss it. My jaw dropped at the sight of these images.

I look forward to your stories. Thank you very much.

.

I particularly like this photograph.

Keep it up.

How mindful are you?

This morning, i was flipping through this issue of Time magazine, Feb 3, 2014, headlined The Mindful Revolution.

The moment i saw the snow monkey image and i knew had to do this juxtaposed image!
The expressions are so similar, something the monkeys do that we are trying so hard to do.

The art of mindfulness is not easy, there are always distractions.

We try, most of us will probably be like this.

Distractions.

13344858954_62ed4d8804_b.jpg

Those who master it will probably be like this.

Mindful.
The art of mindfulness.
Keep calm and soak.

13344475315_749309a2e1_b.jpg

Since i am not that mindful, i did not correct the colour cast, on the white paper.
The magazine cover does seem to extend into the space though.

So are you truly mindful?
If not quite there then, it is time to hit the onsen or soak in your hot tub!

Hi Daoyin, thanks for dropping by and your words of encouragement.
Independence and companionship (some people like solitude though) is something that will smooth the aging journey.
And of course, mindfulness!

I look forward to your stories. Thank you very much.

I love some of the photos and stories here. Very mindful :D...
Which makes me think, a photoblog platform may be more suitable for you. I'm not saying that you shouldn't/can't post here. I just think that photoblog would provide broader coverage for your photos and stories. Also easier for me to "follow" haha :D....

Anyhow, thanks for sharing. Keep 'em coming. Cheers!

Here today, gone tomorrow.

Last Tuesday,I was out walking, came across this and decided that I have a story to tell with this scene. So I went back for my tripod and camera.

Who knows if the digger will be at the right place tomorrow.

Who would know then that this place would make way for another when it was built.
Besides, the last I passed this place, the vacated blocks of Hdb flat were still there and that was about a week or two ago, i think. Unless i walked past without realising...

Here today, gone tomorrow.

The "garmen" n some activist groups are always at a crossroads when it comes to matters like this. Old buildings , plots of natural spaces to make way for newer buildings.

Sometimes there can be compromise, sometimes there are non and flames of sentiments will be dampened (but not doused).
This roadmap of change is never straight forward, there will always be sacrifices.

Streets of fire and passion.

13264440325_099a5ec155_b.jpg

In its place, before you know it, a spanking new and taller block of flat will arise,
like a phoenix from ashes.

Many will be happy, settling into their new homes and the past will be forgotten...or not?

Moonlit night in Clementi. (I love the moon in my photos and prefer the moon in the night sky to sunrise or sunset.)

13264788024_253f32d3f6_b.jpg

So who is there to help us remember the past?

This story is inspired by iluvs90's Commonwealth Drive-A trip down memory lane. (thanks for dropping by and words of encouragement)
The place has a special place in my heart, it is where my grandparents, uncle and aunty stayed. I too spent some time there. Besides my parents, they too loved and took very good care of me when i was a kid. Thank you iluvs90!

I also like to use "streets of fire and passion" for another story.

Crossroads of life.

13382891995_98e61d050b_b.jpg

There are not many easy paths but it will always be an adventure.

Always move forward.

That image brings to mind the movie and theme song from "Streets of fire".

Check out this youtube link for the music http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJk61DfPOug

btw the digger is no longer there by the next day.

Hi GM, Thanks for dropping by and your words of encouragement, i will keep your suggestions in mind. I definitely will drop by pick up some tips from your blog.

I look forward to your stories. Thank you very much.

Bro u have something especial ongoing here. Definitely a post worth following. Will be coming back for more :)

Wa! The pics of your new playground are very nice, especially the BnW one

Always enjoyed your thread Teng Kiat, what u put in your stories will probably take me a year to conceive and write.

Photographers are curious and like to go out to "see" .

I lapped up my chance of going on a boat ride around our port after i signed up for the photo contest organised by MPA.

The results of the contest were revealed yesterday at www.facebook.com/smwsg

As for my entries , it sank to the bottom of the sea.

With it my aspirations , my hopes, my dreams. (had to put this in for drama)

But i have my story!

We set sail in the early hours, one saturday morning from Marina South Pier.

All lenses on deck.

13441716014_f45c40c981_b.jpg

These are the voyages of...

Morning parade.

Every morning, 24/7 these cranes line our coast lines.
Waiting in anticipation of new arrivals of vessels.
All only too eager to unload and load containers of goods destined for our shores or for export to the rest of the world.

13441714724_48c9704d87_b.jpg

The giants of Singapore port.

Approaching ships will always be greeted by the presence of this gargantuan structure as they approach the port of
Singapore.
In the early morning against the sky they present a fairly imposing view.
Almost like a brontosaurus standing at our coastline.

13441336445_bd465e170f_b.jpg

Seafaring maiden.

She sails the seven seas.
The morning sun lights her side and literally paints her into a block of gold.
She brings to our shores pots of gold. Always a welcome arrival.

13441459793_5f8959e234_z.jpg

Good morning Singapore.

Sun, sea and surf.
It's hard to imagine sun, sea and surf being associated with the port of Singapore but it is exactly how i felt that morning
on the deck of Mata Ikan.
I hope all seafarers coming to our shores feel this mood at their journey's end.

13441459283_cf54ee1db6_b.jpg

Correction:
On 31Mar, i received an email indicating that one of the above photos was among the 50 entries selected for the exhibition, so i was wrong when i wrote "it sank to the bottom of the sea". I guess it bobbed up.
Fortunately i wrote this story before that fact, otherwise no drama.
A short story about my print, it is the morning parade that they chose. I dropped by on Tuesday and i saw a heavily cropped photograph, i was pleasantly surprised by the booboo. I wrote to them nicely of course, citing shame of a badly cropped photograph associated with my name and they retified the photograph with a reprint of the right format(1:2.35) two days later. They then sent me an an email showing a new photograph.
I did take a photo of me grinning in front of the original displayed cropped photo. At least i have another story to tell.

continue...

In the lime light.

This is one of those shots that i visualised if i am ever on a boat and i had my chance that morning.
Even though the subject was before me, standing at the stern of the Mata Ikan, i felt like i was in the lime light!
It was a wonderful feeling, the salty sea spray in my face. (ignore the exhaust)
Here's my favorite shot from the trip.

13441335795_18a075bdac_b.jpg

The terms offered by the MPA were very favorable for the photographers. It addresses the sentiments of many photographers who are unwilling to part with their rights to a photo. Definitely, in my opinion honourable terms and not to mention fairly attractive prizes for the winning entries. Do keep an eye out for it when it comes along again, do read the TA though. Kudos to MPA for giving us a fair deal. I hope all government and statutory board can follow their example.

Guys, appreciate your dropping by and your words of encouragements!

Hi iluvs90, i hang around your thread too. Besides your photos, i am also looking forward to another story from you.

Hi Chee Wei, one of this days, when you are out on your own playground and someone comes after you when you are are up close and personal, i hope to be there to capture that moment. In the mean time i look forward to more of your streets.

Hi Hak Wee, in a year's time i look forward to your epic scale photo story.btw I secretly wish i could shoot drama like you do.

So lets grab our gear and go out and have fun!

One more thing, there was an invitation to visit the Raffles lighthouse and guess who is one of the lucky ones? :bsmilie:

I look forward to your stories. Thank you very much.

LOL, u got to be Captain Phillips for a day, with a happy ending of course... and great shots bro! :)
