Hi,

I'm pretty sure you r going to be flamed soon.

Juz a word of advice. For building of portfolio, you can always request to tag along another photographer to gain exposure. However, it is not good to do it FOC and get into the tongue of war with your "customers" later if you did not meet to their expectations.

Take some time to ponder what I've said.

Gd Luck.

Cheers

Yes i understand what u mean...thank you for pointing that out. But not many photogs wanna bring along a 2nd photog for their shoot. And for this, is meant for those really on a tight budget or just need basic event coverage.

To be honest friend, I took a look at your portfolio and I think that you can certainly enter the market with a $500 price tag. (But please raise your price as your clientel base rises)

As for tagging along as a second photographer, many photographers will not mind, provided you do not steal their clients. In exchange, most would like a copy of your work. (That is the frawside you have to contend with).

Hmmmmm.........I shoot for free too sometimes. However, event photography is not going to be my rice bowl and neither am I interested to use these pictures as my portfolio. Shooting for free isn't a flawed idea, it is simply a fact of life. The flawed idea is being able to make a living out of event photography.

In my opinion, letting your services out for free isn't too smart. It gives off the image that you are a average photographer that isn't worth much as many people tag pricing to quality. You do pay more to own a BMW, as compared to a Toyota. Also, what if your equipment gets damaged or lost during the shoot? Who is going to repay you? How are you going to replace the equipment damaged? Lastly, if you start out so low, and give good quality, if you want to continue on in this line of work, you are just undercutting your profits and the profits of your fellow photographers. Maybe you don't feel the pinch, but they, with housing loans to pay, children to feed and the car to maintain, do.he

If you want more exposure to build up your portfolio, why not go for events yourself? And try to tag along with your friends for their events? Do ask permission to use their pictures for your portfolio. And, money in your pocket and in the bank saves you during that rainy day, or week.

I think it's in your best interests to find a photographer who will let you tag along. (If you don't mind passing him your images).

Otherwise, what Sam has said is pretty relevant. The only flaw I can find is that if you are "attached" to an official photographer, you will be able to get much closer to the subjects, or to restricted areas. That may mean a different angle (eg. beauty contests). Events that have a central stage can really restrict your view to shooting from the front.

If he is in a desperate situation to get the pics into his portfolio, he will do anything even if it means to sacrifice his own interests for the benefit of others. If a person don't even mind shedding his own blood, would he mind how the blood of others flow?

The desire to shoot for free to get pictures into portfolio can't be stopped. Rather, it is silly as having event pictures in the portfolio is a big joke to begin with. Put it this way, if you help to take event pictures without a portfolio now, do you think you will need a portfolio to take events in future? Also, if you shoot for free today, there will be 100 others more who shoot for free tomorrow. Perhaps, you are one of the thousands who are already shooting for free........:bsmilie:

I suggest you ignore the rest and carry on with your life. I think it's a good idea to pick up experience. I took a peep at your portfolio, and my conclusion is that you're definitely not ready for event photography. You have yet to be able to bring over your creativity from your still life/abstract shots to your "event" shots.

just ignore those nay-sayers, and find someone to tag along. For events, I think to learn you need to tag along with a much better photographer. It's only after, then you can compare photos, and see how come his shots are better than yours, how come he can capture those small little things that you didn't even notice, as well as how come he can convey emotions while you can't.

Seriously, shooting events without a solid higher target to aim for won't improve your shots any single bit. You'll just grow contented with your shots without injecting any creativity/thought to them.

How about you check out The National Volunteer & Philanthropy Centre, the are plenty of opportunities for your to volunteer you photography service.

You also can contact your RC members to offer your service.

Beside these, there are also many many charity organizations also need someone to volunteer, like halfway homes etc..

all these organizations truthfully appreciate the time and efforts offered by all the volunteers, you will enjoy working with them.

and mind you, you may able to shoot some news letters or annual reports for them, some may have charities events grace by very high profile GOHs.

come to think about it, who will ask you to cover their birthday event if they don't know you at all? moreover, you are doing it for FREE? some might think you have hidden agenda, like selling MLM or whatever, they would rather ask their friend or hire a freelance photographer to do it.

For doing company D&D for free, you might be rip off by some middle man you also don't know.

If a company want to hire you for some events, most of them won't ask you for portfolio, unless they think you are "green" "green". for these type of companies, you need to show them some works of MNC events or event have some prominent figures to impress them, not some photos of XMM's birthday parties.

Hope this help.
