Agree with you that cash is best of course but was just trying to offer a suggestion as he was looking for options -

Besides I'm not talking about law of torts but the Penal Code where cheating by knowingly issuing a cash cheque without sufficient funds is a serious, seizable (can be arrested without warrant) offence compared to issuing a bounced personal cheque which is only classified as a civil suit case of fraudulent debtor.
And the point you said about insurance, even if one was not in the business of renting equipment, it's still a good idea to buy insurance to cover your personal equipment against loss, theft or damage especially if you have a considerable amount of expensive gear. I personally do that. NTUC Income offers reasonable coverage under its Mobile Equipment insurance.
