Epson RD-1 still worth it?

why spend so much money on digital if film can do the job better?
unless your assignment requires u to need to shoot like machine guns, and film is getting so expensive. digital camera loses its value like mad after awhile. film cameras are timeless, esp those with fine mechanical built..

I was at MAP camera earlier. They only had one R-D1 on sale for Y168,000. The camera looked a little tired, everything seems to be working, except I couldn't be 100% sure the RF alignment is accurate. The actual camera look and feel quite big, and the shutter is quite loud.

I took a look at the VC bodies and lenses. But the used prices are only a few dollars cheaper than Chiff's new prices. After the conversion, it'll probably cost the same. Kudos to Chiff for offering such great prices.

In the end I feel a M8 might be better suited for me. I did buy a Nikkor SC 50/1.4. Heehee.

You can get VAT rebate on Map Cameras. Hence price is 5% than the published price. I bought the last new set of R-D1s in Map sometime back. And they are the only one in Shinjuku area that were still carrying them.

M8 prices in Japan is higher than in Singapore. I think this partly could attribute to the high Yen compared to SGD.

A few things you could look out for if you are into lenses: Lucky Camera also in Shinjuku area has a pretty good range of used lenses and MF bodies. It's located just outside the South East Exit of Shinjuku station.

Lucky Camera Shop
160-0022 3-36-16 Shinjuku Shinjuku-ku Tokyo Japan

Not a big shop, pretty small, but they have quite interesting things there if you look carefully. Credit Cards +5% more.

The Hexar bodies in Japan are pretty attractive... you might just want to buy one and play play. :)

Wow, the LTM version? the one that GLOWS? Nice lens.
Looks like a lot of CSers were, are or is going to be in Japan:cool::cool:

Well.... perhaps it's a good thing for me then! Gommy you are so very poisonous!

Cheers,

my friend told me he got his rd1 for S$1500.. i think he got an extremely good bargain that time

S$1500 is an excellent price indeed! But I suppose that must have been quite sometime ago. Now, the demand seems to be greater than the supply and the used prices have steadily been creeping up. I gave up waiting for a bargain and bit the bullet. Got my used set at around S$2500 to S$2600.

Cheers,

I think the RD-1 is a great little camera.

I still sold mine to Gommy only for the fact of a 1.5 crop factor. I think it still has the M8 licked for white balance. Haha.

are there any digital rangefinders due to be released over the coming years?

Anyone knows how much the new R-1Ds costs now (in Singapore)?

Thanks in advance!

I don't think there's any new Epson R-D1s sold in Singapore at this point in time. It was discontinued long ago. Some used camera shops or the classified here might have an occasional used set.

Cheers,

Thanks Benny, i will look around then ;)

Just got back from Tokyo and my first extended outing with my RD1s. I love the ergonomics of it, though not as much as my ZI or R2A.

I just wish it had a deeper buffer to it. I am by no means a rapid-fire shooter but there are times when shooting raw that I've missed a shot waiting for the buffer to clear.

Its a matter of immediacy and personal preference...
I need it not for assignments but for family photos where your wife and kids wouldn't scream at you "Wouldn't you Hurry Up!?" :)

I had used an Epson R-D1 before (T-loan to me for 3 months, haha..). It is a nice camera, capable of producing image with excellent quality. However, it is indeed very slow, but that may be a good thing for some;)

I can also confirm that it is very easy to adjust focusing alignments on the R-D1 (no experience on R-D1s so cannot comment.) The best thing is: you can kind of "calibrate" the focusing spot to suit your eyesight. way cool.

It must be the only digital cam that holds its value so well. For a discontinued/5-6 yr old cam, it is still commanding ~$2K, not bad at all. Just look at Nikon D70, (supposedly used the same sensor as the R-D1), if can get $600 tao chio liao.
